REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 6:33 PMMy city can put greenways in different spaces. My city could put green spaces in not just wealthy spaces, but all different income areas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 11:05 AMThere is a heavy impact on my thoughts because of the environmental issues humans have caused. It makes me think about the future and wonder what's going to happen. Humans destroying so much has made me feel overwhelmed. I am feeling hopeful about how humans have stopped using so many CFCs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Retrofitting IncentivesHow can you share what you have learned in your research with others?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 10:58 AMI can post on social media, talk to my friends, talk to my teachers, talk to my classmates, talk to my family, text people about it, advertize about it, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 10:51 AMI learned that tidal turbines are more expensive to build and maintain than wind turbines, but produce more energy. tidal energy is more powerful than wind energy, producing exponentially more power at the same turbine diameter and rotor speed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Research the Wonders of Macroalgae / SeaweedWhat did you learn about seaweed and its importance to coastal ecosystems?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 9:58 AMI learned that Seaweed provides food and habitat for other marine species, cleans coastal waters by removing excess nutrients from runoff, and absorbs carbon dioxide from the water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 9:52 AMDepending on the income level and where people live, family planning and needs can differ. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 9:46 AMI can invest my advocacy in using geothermal energy. I can start to tell my friends about why they should use geothermal energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Lillian Ray 5/31/2024 9:37 AMWomen have issues with getting taken seriously, not being payed the same as men, and not having equal opportunities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Lillian Ray 5/13/2024 10:02 AMMicrowind turbines could possibly be put on the Biltmore and around the Biltmore. They could also be put on The Arras. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 RsWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Lillian Ray 5/13/2024 9:45 AMWhen reducing my waste I practiced the 5 Rs. Instead of just reducing my overall waste, I also reused and rethinked a lot. I reused my old plastic grocery bags as lunch boxes. This weekend over to a potluck picnic so I reused my old bags to hold the food I brought. I also rethinked using a plastic Starbucks cup instead of using my own.
