  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 5/18/2024 8:35 AM
In Asheville, wind turbines could be installed on top of large buildings and hotels, such as The Arras Hotel, which is currently the tallest building in Asheville.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Cory Moody 5/17/2024 9:56 AM
Women, especially in marginalized communities are put at an extreme disadvantage. For example take the music industry, more specifically brass players. A study done by ResearchGate found that brass sections are up to 95% men. Many a time I have found myself as the only woman in my section or studio, sometimes in the entirety of low brass. Women are often found at the top of these sections because to be even remotely taken seriously as a female musician you must be flawless.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 5/14/2024 9:52 AM
The investment into research, home installation, and the investment of my time for personal research and understanding is more feasible for me. I think geothermal energy could be very promising if applicable for my future life and the investment of my time and money could give me an economic and environmental advantage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 5/09/2024 9:55 AM
Biomass can sequester about 2.62 to 3.59 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere and could save us about 218.83 to 287.99 billion USD. Biomass could be used as a “bridge energy source” while we make our grid more flexible. It surprised me that biomass energy can be created from things that are already being produced.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 5/06/2024 8:54 AM
I noticed that my dog somehow has boundless amounts of energy. She can run at full speed for 30+ minutes with no break and be completely fine. My neighborhood is full of infrastructure that's inaccessible for wheelchair and mobility aid users, such as uneven sidewalks and stairways with no access ramps.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 5/03/2024 9:17 AM
To protect peatlands we can make sure to use/purchase products that don’t come from land that used to be peatlands or contain peat. We can also pay attention to the legislature that affects peatlands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 4/30/2024 9:55 AM
I learned that improper manufacturing and disposal practices of refrigerants can have monumental effects on the climate. Supermarkets often have large refrigerated sections where leaks and breakdowns are prevalent. Large chain stores often neglect proper disposal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Practice the 5 Rs
What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 4/29/2024 8:52 AM
I could make sure to pay more attention to what and how I recycle and follow all recycling instructions on packaging,
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Cory Moody's avatar
    Cory Moody 4/25/2024 9:18 AM
Knowing the difference between these styles of dating means you can buy food that will last longer. This ultimately leads to less food waste and less money wasted.
