  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

I would probably install new lights for one of the other systems in my house
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A Garden
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

I have never experienced this before but maybe I will someday.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Elora Condron's avatar

Anywhere not blocking access to the wind, for example, the top of the county building
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

A couple things that I have learned are that biofuels are created by converting biomass into liquid fuels to meet transportation needs, and that biomass solution uses the use of perennial biomass to generate electricity and heat. Some off the things that I found surprising were how biomass can be converted into chemicals for making plastics and other products but they are typically made from petroleum, and another thing that I thought was surprising/cool was that Perennials are generally defined as plants that live three or more years.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Elora Condron's avatar
    Elora Condron 5/03/2024 7:51 AM
Well because palm oil is used in many beauty products but not all, we can help to decrease the use and need for these by looking at the bottle, reading it, and if it uses this then choosing not to purchase it and finding one that doesn’t will be a step to take that will help the peatlands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Elora Condron's avatar
    Elora Condron 4/30/2024 5:57 PM
I learned that the worlds use of refrigerants has lead to a hole in our ozone layer. Supermarkets contribute to this by making a big contribution to what is being produced because they use a lot of refrigerants to keep their many cold aisles cold.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Elora Condron's avatar
    Elora Condron 4/25/2024 8:04 AM
Eating less red meat and more fruits and veggies can help with cholesterol and cardiovascular problems.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Elora Condron's avatar
    Elora Condron 4/25/2024 7:41 AM
You yourself can be healthier. Also, you will have better control, and eating less will make things last longer which will help with food costs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Elora Condron's avatar
    Elora Condron 4/25/2024 7:37 AM
Well if I know my sell/used/best by dates then I can know when I need to use those things and not buy more than I can use to stop wasting
