  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Anna Payne 5/15/2024 8:02 AM
An investment that seems most feasible to me is to build a few geothermal power plants to see how citizens like them and if they do to continue the spread of geothermal power plants throughout the country. We could also, if the power plants are received positively, encourage other countries to join and build geothermal power plants of their own.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 5/13/2024 7:24 AM
Micro turbines could potentially be installed in a field or on the tops of buildings in my city. These locations would be best due to greater exposure to the flow of wind. A turbine on the ground near buildings could have the buildings block the wind or the turbine could hit a pedestrian.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 5/09/2024 8:02 AM
I have heard of biomass technology before this. Something that surprised me is that biomass can greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 5/07/2024 7:06 AM
On my daily walks I have noticed the pretty flowers that are starting to bloom and all of the dogs that live in my neighborhood. I have enjoyed my walks because I live in a flat area with sidewalks. My walks could be more enjoyable if there were more crosswalks at road intersections.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 5/03/2024 7:30 AM
Something I can do to help protect the peatlands is researching ways to help restore them and spreading awareness about the situation. I can also stop using products that contain palm oil and get others to do the same to bring down the demand for palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 4/30/2024 8:42 AM
I learned that refrigerators are helping to accelerate the speed of the ozone layers destruction. Supermarkets contribute to this by having aisles of refrigerators to store their food.

I found that some items have to be taken to places such as the landfill to be recycled instead of a garbage can or recycling bin like most. Landfills or other waste sites are located near large buildings that tend to build up lots of waste. The communities affected by these areas the most are lower-income ones due to them not being able to move to cleaner areas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 4/25/2024 8:05 AM
Eating more fruits and vegetables affects people by lowering chances of diabetes and heart disease. It affects our planet by using less energy and lowering greenhouse gas intensities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 4/25/2024 8:03 AM
People in richer countries have more access to meat than those in poor countries. Eating more meat affects our bodies by raising cholesterol levels in your blood and raising risk of heart disease.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Anna Payne's avatar
    Anna Payne 4/25/2024 7:32 AM
Knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates help me make better decisions by knowing how long to use products before I should throw them away and knowing which products will last longer and peak quality.
