Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/31/2024 7:27 AM
Finding different recipes that need to use all components of a vegetable could stop me from wasting other parts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/29/2024 6:41 PM
I go shopping at different stores and I have soccer a lot of the time. I could definitely carpool with people on those days because I already do that often.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the Coast
What coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/26/2024 7:54 AM
I visited Wilmington and I learned that even though it wasnt extremely hot and the UV wasnt super high I could still get burned pretty badly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/24/2024 7:27 AM
We can make sure that everyone, wherever they live, has green spaces. So people in rich neighborhoods will have the same green areas and good air quality as people in less fortunate neighborhoods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/20/2024 6:13 AM
I notice that I dont pass a lot of people when im walking. I enjoy walking with my friends. Cars going slower, more green areas, and wider sidewalks could make my walks more enjoyable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/17/2024 8:11 AM
There are a lot of barriers women face in our community. One is that a lot of the time we aren't accepted as much. For example in some jobs we wouldn't be considered equal to men because we don't fit the standards that men set up. These barriers exist because rules were made a way so that women aren't as equal, we can address this by bringing more awareness to this and helping change the standards.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/16/2024 8:07 AM
Family planning is essential for all people. It helps with reproductive health as well as preparing for families. It can also cause a decrease in poverty because when you plan for your family you can be more prepared financially.
People in less fortunate places have less access economically and can make it hard for family planning. People in more fortunate areas have more availability to it and it is easier for them in some ways.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/14/2024 7:57 AM
Ways you can invest into geothermal energy is by supporting companies that design and install geothermal products and investing from your home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/13/2024 7:56 AM
I didn't know what it was but I might've heard of it before. I learned that it helps power electricity and our earth without harming it with greenhouse gas emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Pearl Palme's avatar
    Pearl Palme 5/13/2024 7:30 AM
A micro turbine needs to be high up at least 30 feet. It can be placed on larger land spaces or farms for energy. I think it could be installed by a tall mountain/hill in nc or an open area.
