REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Anne Hyland 5/07/2024 7:10 AMI typically eat with my phone when I'm alone but when I'm eating with someone I tend to eat more mindfully. I think that the main difference is that you're focusing a little more on the food that you are eating when you practice mindfulness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the CoastWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Anne Hyland 5/07/2024 7:05 AMI visited Southeastern coastal North Carolina (Carolina beach). While I was there I looked at algae on rocks and I learned a little about Sandpipers and their ecosystems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Anne Hyland 5/03/2024 7:27 AMI could reduce my use of palm oil and pulp to create less need for the plantations. I can also make sure to not use excess paper and be sure to recycle all the paper I do use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Anne Hyland 5/03/2024 7:01 AMWe drove to Wilmington, which is not a super long drive and we'd never fly that short but some people I know would fly that distance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Anne Hyland 4/30/2024 7:10 AMOther than environmental benefits, serving yourself smaller portions could help you to only eat a sustainable amount and not overeat. It will also obviously help to save food so you wouldn't need to restock/cook as often. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Anne Hyland 4/26/2024 7:32 AMPeople in richer countries eat more meat than in other places because of the availability and cost. Meat production negatively affects the planet because it's a big contributor to pollution, climate change, and habitat loss. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Anne Hyland 4/25/2024 7:29 AMYes it does because I kind of just assumed that they all meant when is it safe by and I didn’t know that they were all mainly about when the product will taste best by. Now that I understand the difference I can be more sure to find out when the food is not safe to eat.
