  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 12:13 PM
Some of the barriers that exist in women’s equal participation on a global scale include unequal access to education, unequal access to jobs that can support their livelihoods, and unequal access to the basic rights that are afforded to men without question. These barriers have forced many women to resort to marrying at extremely young ages, and in turn also give birth to their children at very young ages. These barriers exist because of women's lack of access to education and the many stigmas surrounding women throughout history, as well as today. I think we can address these issues by working to reduce the stigmas surrounding women, and advocate for all women to have equal access to education.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 11:52 AM
In my region it is recommended that we eat Sunshine Bass, and that we avoid eating Striped Bass. I don't eat much seafood so this doesn't really affect my diet choices at all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 11:04 AM
Asheville can make its climate action plans equitable and socially just by investing in neighborhoods with lower socioeconomic statuses, and by making a strong effort to avoid dumping our city's waste near these neighborhoods.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 10:50 AM
On my walks around my neighborhood I have seen a large variety of animals and plants. My favorite thing about the walks is seeing the houses in the area because most of them are very old, and they hold a lot of historical significance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 10:43 AM
I can incorporate other "Rs" into my lifestyle by reducing the amount of products that I consume that cannot be recycled, I can repair things like clothes that I would otherwise dispose of, I could also use my creativity to re purpose things that I would otherwise dispose of.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:23 AM
Eating/serving smaller portions can help save money because there wouldn't be as much need to go shopping for more food.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:15 AM
I already drive a fully electric vehicle. I spent a lot of time with my mom researching the benefits of these vehicles, but personally the thing I have noticed the most is that I don't have to spend a ton of money each month paying for gas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:01 AM
CFC’s are a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer and the increase in global warming. Supermarkets use a large number of refrigerators to keep all of their foods fresh, and as a result they allow a lot of CFC’s to enter our atmosphere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 8:49 AM
Microturbines could potentially be placed on tall buildings in Asheville like city hall, the courthouse, Indigo hotel, and other tall buildings in the area. They could also be placed on cell towers on top of mountains where there is a consistent breeze.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Tiller Haugaard's avatar
    Tiller Haugaard 5/09/2024 11:22 AM
I had never heard of biomass technology before this. I think the most surprising thing for me is that it could be used to produce plastic that is recyclable and biodegradable since plastic is such a huge contributor to global waste.
