Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Electric Cars, Hybrid Cars
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org and download the app to commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Buildings
Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Multiple Solutions
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about green gentrification and how it relates to city planning for climate action.
Health and Education
Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the barriers to women's equal participation and representation around the world.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.

Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 30 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 30 minutes learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Industry
Research Local Waste and Recycling Depots
To learn more about what is and is not recyclable in our area as well as how to properly dispose of hard to recycle materials to reduce my harmful impacts on the local environment AND learn how indigenous peoples and POC are more likely to be impacted by waste sites and pollution on a global scale.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 12:13 PMSome of the barriers that exist in women’s equal participation on a global scale include unequal access to education, unequal access to jobs that can support their livelihoods, and unequal access to the basic rights that are afforded to men without question. These barriers have forced many women to resort to marrying at extremely young ages, and in turn also give birth to their children at very young ages. These barriers exist because of women's lack of access to education and the many stigmas surrounding women throughout history, as well as today. I think we can address these issues by working to reduce the stigmas surrounding women, and advocate for all women to have equal access to education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 11:52 AMIn my region it is recommended that we eat Sunshine Bass, and that we avoid eating Striped Bass. I don't eat much seafood so this doesn't really affect my diet choices at all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 11:04 AMAsheville can make its climate action plans equitable and socially just by investing in neighborhoods with lower socioeconomic statuses, and by making a strong effort to avoid dumping our city's waste near these neighborhoods. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 10:50 AMOn my walks around my neighborhood I have seen a large variety of animals and plants. My favorite thing about the walks is seeing the houses in the area because most of them are very old, and they hold a lot of historical significance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Recycle Everything I CanHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 10:43 AMI can incorporate other "Rs" into my lifestyle by reducing the amount of products that I consume that cannot be recycled, I can repair things like clothes that I would otherwise dispose of, I could also use my creativity to re purpose things that I would otherwise dispose of. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:23 AMEating/serving smaller portions can help save money because there wouldn't be as much need to go shopping for more food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:15 AMI already drive a fully electric vehicle. I spent a lot of time with my mom researching the benefits of these vehicles, but personally the thing I have noticed the most is that I don't have to spend a ton of money each month paying for gas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Research the Climate Impact of RefrigerantsWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 9:01 AMCFC’s are a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer and the increase in global warming. Supermarkets use a large number of refrigerators to keep all of their foods fresh, and as a result they allow a lot of CFC’s to enter our atmosphere. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Tiller Haugaard 5/31/2024 8:49 AMMicroturbines could potentially be placed on tall buildings in Asheville like city hall, the courthouse, Indigo hotel, and other tall buildings in the area. They could also be placed on cell towers on top of mountains where there is a consistent breeze. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Tiller Haugaard 5/09/2024 11:22 AMI had never heard of biomass technology before this. I think the most surprising thing for me is that it could be used to produce plastic that is recyclable and biodegradable since plastic is such a huge contributor to global waste.
