  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Research Bottom-Trawling Seafloor Impacts
Why is protecting the seafloor important?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/31/2024 10:29 AM
Because it helps provide for all of the sea creatures, and its also a habitat for some creatures to live in.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/31/2024 7:44 AM
I learned that it is very helpful and can be used for many things!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/30/2024 7:36 AM
You can make choices to help protect peatlands by trying to stay away from using palm oil, pulp, and paper plantations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/30/2024 7:24 AM
I learned that the impact of refrigerants can cause a big negative impact on the ozone layer. This can cause heath impacts on plants and humans. It also causes a bigger hole in the ozone. Supermarkets contribute to this because they have so many refrigerators that they power un-naturally and it causes a lot of emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/24/2024 9:49 AM
Our city can make its climate action plans equitable and socially just by not driving people out of their neighborhoods, but insteads leading people to them. This will help us economically, without causing harm to people.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/17/2024 11:11 AM
Some barriers are not having medical control over women's body's. If you cannot have control over your own body you do not have equal rights. And it could even be dangerous.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/16/2024 6:16 AM
I could spend more time learning about it and think about involving it in my future home or if I have a business in the future. As well as telling other people the benefits of geothermal enegry.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/14/2024 10:40 AM
School is the main place I drive to, and i would say yes, especially if its after school because it wouldn't be hard to do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 5/13/2024 11:16 AM
They could be installed at higher elevations so that more high power wind gets to them and they are more effective.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Rivers Haugaard's avatar
    Rivers Haugaard 4/30/2024 10:28 AM
Knowing the difference between the three of these helps make better decisions because it reduces waste.
