REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Joseph Flaherty 5/24/2024 7:24 AMBy people adding solar panels to houses, they save money in the long term. And some of those people are owners of renting houses. And when they add greener things to the property, they can use the money they saved for those trees and not increase the price of the home for the family living in there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Joseph Flaherty 5/19/2024 6:25 PMI have heard of biomass technology before this, but I didn’t know that it would cost so much. I also found out how hard it is to build farms for biomass. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Joseph Flaherty 5/19/2024 10:34 AMI think that microturbines can be installed at the top of some of the small mountains beside the city, and on top of lots of buildings downtown in the city. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Joseph Flaherty 5/14/2024 7:55 AMI think that an investment in factories would be better because the other option is to build something under everyone’s houses, which is very expensive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Joseph Flaherty 5/03/2024 6:06 PMTo protect peatlands, avoid buying products with unsustainable palm oil or excessive paper packaging. These include cosmetics, cleaning products, and some form of foods like cake and chocolate. Cut back on items that heavily rely on these resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Joseph Flaherty 4/25/2024 8:01 AMKnowing the difference between these dates help me make better decisions because now I know how much work is being put into for just a little bit of food to work its way to you.
