Transportation

Use Muscle Power

Multiple Transportation Solutions

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity

Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy

Ocean Power

I will spend at least 40 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Express My Support For Equitable Biking Infrastructure

Bicycle Infrastructure

I will find out who in my city makes decisions that impact bike routes and express my support for better biking infrastructure.

Today, I switched the bus for my bike on my way to the metro station. It was a great way to get my daily exercise while also cutting down on emissions, a small, yet satisfying step towards a healthier environment.

    Transportation Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

Today, instead of taking the bus or using my car, I walked to the metro station. This shift in my routine was good for my physical activity and reduced me being reliant on my car. I've noticed how i got more fresh air and felt better at the same time for helping the environment.

Electricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

After spending an hour researching and exploring the potential of wave and tidal energy for generating power, I've learned how these renewable energy sources operate. I was fascinated by the methods that are used to capture the power of ocean waves and tidal flows, along with the recent technological advancements that have been made. Also on the environmental implications and the obstacles that need to be addressed for wider implementation of these energies. Considering these points helped me think about how wave and tidal energy could be incorporated into current power networks and what steps are necessary to overcome these challenges. I learned that these technologies not only harness the natural movements of water but also promise a consistent and predictable source of clean energy. Finally, i learned about the challenges, such as the high costs and technical difficulties associated with setting up and maintaining the infrastructure needed to capture and convert this energy.

Sure! The main technical issues with wave and tidal energy are from the marine environments, for instance, corrosion and the need for durable, storm-resistant technology. These things make starting up quite expensive compared to other renewable energy sources, and although ongoing costs are lower, the maintenance needed can add up. Environmentally, wave and tidal energy are quite clean, but we must consider their effects on marine life. It needs more innovation to become more cheaper and environmentally safe.

Hi Amnah, can you give us a bit more detail about the challenges - what are the technical difficulties, as far as you understand? Also, how does it compare to other renewables in terms of cost to set up, cost to use, environmental problems (if any)?
