At this point there's so many injustices women have to fight against. I learned that lack of reproductive rights and voting rights are significant issues. For trans people their existence and healthcare services are under attack. It's despicable! Girls I've been told deal with a lot of bullying and self-esteem struggles.. also racism is rampant in certain schools.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

On the weekends I go to local coffee house by car. I'll change it up and use my bike more often

How close is the nearest climate-friendly supermarket to your home? How could you encourage local supermarket to reduce or phase out their use of HFC refrigerants?

There are no groceries listed in town on this list. I will contact two local groceries to ask this question to encourage them to consider this.

What was the most interesting thing to learn about sustainable aquaculture practices?

    Beth Eckl's avatar
    Beth Eckl 3/23/2025 12:01 PM
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), land based, closed systems, are viewed as a sustainable solution.

92% of fish escapes are from sea-based farms.

Farmed fish from nearshore farms release millions of gallons of wastewater every day into local estuaries.

I'm making fruit shakes for myself. Today I made a strawberry, apple and kiwi one and added some OJ. It was easy to digest and boosted my energy. Yummy 😋

I really enjoy eating mindfully because I get to taste and chew my food. I like the silence. It's very calming. I've also noticed that if I eat mindfully at night I sleep a bit better.

Today I wrote and called my legislators about importance of protecting wetlands. But I first did some research and found out I really didn't know much about this topic. I feel overwhelmed by the chaos in the world right now and doing these actions help me slowdown and focus
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What was the hardest item to reduce using or cut out that is plastic? Did you find a way to do it?

    Beth Eckl's avatar
    Beth Eckl 3/15/2025 12:12 PM
This is a tough one as I have not found alternatives for many items, such as contact lenses solution bottles, trash bags, and some packaging.

I am using alternative dog poop bags but still question their compostability in a landfill.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Beth Eckl's avatar
    Beth Eckl 3/09/2025 4:26 PM
In richer countries, the expectation is to serve meat with every meal. Eating meat contributes to greenhouse gas emissions which negatively impacts our health. Eating meat can also increase odds of getting certain cancers.

I enjoyed my first action. Social media posts are a good way to educate and mobilize people. I’ll keep posting something bi-weekly. Consistency promotes real change. Thanks.
