Electricity Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

I was shocked by how much carbon footprint my diets contributed. In order to improve that, I'm choosing locally grown and supplied food over than packaged goods that's being transported to where I live. Moreover, I will try to add one or two vegetarian meal every month.

I tried to contact PG&E, but their website doesn't have an email address. You can only fill out the comment/question form if you have a PG&E account #, which I don't. I'll have to search more to find a way to contact them. Residents can be concerned about gas leaks even if we don't have an account in our name!

I took my friend and his 1st Grade kid on a short hike in the East Bay hills regional park. For most of the hike, the little boy was dragging his feet and asking to go home and play Minecraft. But then I told him about Serpentine, the CA state rock, and had a whole conversation about asbestos and minerals, etc. I showed him an outcrop of serpentine rock and he took a couple of little tiny pebbles and rubbed them to make them shiny and green, and then he took them home and soaked them in water to see what they looked like. Now he's asking all about geology!

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

I was able to buy a 4-pack of bamboo toilet paper this week at Whole Foods in Oakland. In the past, I've ordered a big box (48 rolls) from "Who Gives a Crap," which has plastic-free packaging and home delivery.

    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

I had heard of "hempcrete" before, but I was interested to learn more. I found some interesting articles online, and I learned that hempcrete was included for the first time in 2022 in the International Residential Code (building codes) which makes it way easier to permit hempcrete across the US now! https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/02/could-your-next-home-be-made-of-hemp/
I also looked into "sugarcrete" - a new award-winning material made from bagasse fiber left over from pressing sugar juice out of sugar cane. It's light, strong, and theres a LOT of it! https://grimshaw.global/news/articles/sugarcrete-revealed/
Both of these new materials sequester carbon and save a LOT of energy that goes into making regular concrete. Pretty great. My only question is if the bagasse is normally chopped up and left on the fields, will the soil be deprived of organic matter biodegrading back into the soil?

Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Hm. The resources listed under this action didn't actually provide any usable info about the topic. However, buying 2nd hand clothes allows for a lot of personality and creativity, and saves a lot of money. Learning to make and repair our own clothes is another level... working on it.

What was an inspiring thing you learned in Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series?

I watched Unit 1 video which drew relation between climate change and human activities. The ever high records of energy use, water and land use has forever changed our life but also changed the atmosphere of our planet. While our life is getting more convenient, we are also paying the price of damaging our planet. Yet, it may seem grim but the situation is indeed changeable and hopeful.

I found an organization that helps people in Uganda and Nepal build clean cookstoves out of local materials. For a donation of $10, that supports one stove that reduces GHG emissions, indoor air pollution, and time spent gathering firewood. Nice videos at https://cookstoveproject.org/
