REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Emily Winemiller (902) 10/23/2024 9:25 AMThe thought of wasting water is what motivates me to make a change the most. This is because water is a very valuable resource, and I feel very bad wasting it when I know that there are people and places in areas of the world that do not even have access to safe, clean water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Emily Winemiller (902) 10/18/2024 10:00 AMAside from the many environmental benefits of less food waste, another benefit may include a healthier diet/healthier and happier population. For example, if a person is reducing their serving sizes, this may keep them from over-eating. This may also lead to them feeling a sense of happiness and accomplishment since they would know that they are making a difference in the world by reducing waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 RsWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Emily Winemiller (902) 10/09/2024 7:22 PMI plan to remember to recycle my waste whenever possible. Also, I plan to begin taking my own reusable bags to the grocery store so that I do not have to use as many single-use plastic bags. Lastly, I will do my best to purchase items that come in no-or-low-waste packaging rather than purchasing items packaged in plastic or styrofoam. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Emily Winemiller (902) 10/08/2024 8:56 AMSometimes when packing my lunch, I use plastic bags to hold my food. However, my family and I have recently started using reusable glass tupperware containers. This will help to reduce the amount of plastic going to the landfill, and it will also help to keep us healthier by reducing the amount of microplastics that we consume with our food. I use a reusable metal water bottle as well! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Emily Winemiller (902) 10/07/2024 9:50 AMI have noticed that things like sidewalks, crosswalks, and walking paths have made it much easier and safer to walk, especially in areas with a lot of traffic. I have enjoyed spending time outdoors, though it has been rainy, and getting the daily exercise that I need through walking. It is also nice to know that though it may be small, I am making a positive impact by walking.
