Participant Feed

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/30/2025 5:30 PM
I learned how many millions of women lack either education or resources for effective family planning. The needs are similar depending on social conditions, but the types and amount of resources to support people in different places for family planning are different depending on the location and how wealthy the area is.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/29/2025 7:01 PM
People in richer countries eat more meat because firstly, it is slightly more expensive than carbohydrate-dense foods, and secondly because they have the capability to. Doing this is bad for your health, as it increases the risk of diseases and bacteria, and it is extremely bad for the environment due to the carbon cost of eating meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/24/2025 5:58 PM
I did not know of biomass before the challenge. I was surprised to learn about how it has a net 0 carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/23/2025 5:07 PM
Trying to put money into a gofundme for projects to do this where it matters, at least until we’re able to financially do this ourselves.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/23/2025 4:44 PM
I use a lot of single use water bottles, which I can reduce by carrying a water bottle with me everywhere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/22/2025 6:28 PM
It helps me to find food that could be thrown away otherwise to reduce food waste. It also lets me know not to throw away food that could still be good.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/22/2025 6:24 PM
I had not learned about it before now, but now that I know about it, I think it is very beneficial because it is both healthier for cows, but also because it produces more meat with less of a carbon cost.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/22/2025 6:23 PM
I want to reduce the amount of oil we consume and try to fight against the oil industry. Also, I want to find energy-efficient vehicles that aren't made by Elon Musk.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
Which businesses that you researched are you excited to support? Are you already supporting businesses that you didn't know were owned by women, people of color, or immigrants?

    Maathai Vesely-Flad's avatar
    Maathai Vesely-Flad 4/22/2025 5:38 PM
There is a gaming store near my home that is owned by a woman, and while I already knew it was owned by a woman, I regularly support a business near me that is owned by a woman.

While I eat mindfully consistently, I need to post it to my story more.
