Reef's actions
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Cook With Sustainable Seafood
Improved Fisheries
Using the Seafood Watch guide, I will feature a sustainable seafood ingredient in a new recipe.
Industry
Learn about Carbon Offsets
I will spend 5 minutes learning about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org and download the app to commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Industry
Plastics Audit
Reduced Plastics
I will complete a plastics audit to see where plastics show up in my life and determine how I can reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin practicing it in my own life.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 10 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost or worm bin where I live.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 5 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 60 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:54 PMAll the light bulbs in my house are already all LED which is good to save energy and money. The next step to saving energy is by turning off lights/fans when we're not using them or to unplug appliances which we aren't using so they don't drain any energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:52 PMI have been going out to the beach a lot because I want to fully take advantage of the amazing beaches we have here in San Diego. I've been going as much as I possibly can because I truly love the beach but it has been very hard because of how cold it has been, in the summer though I am going to be going to the beach at least once a week definitely. It is my last real summer for high school so I have to make the very best of every last day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn about Carbon OffsetsWhat are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:44 PMConsidering the carbon impact of a product that you buy is very important because if you don't then you perpetuate the problem. Although this is very difficult because many of the devices we have that are an everyday and vital part of modern life require many materials from mining or etc which can produce a heavy carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:41 PMI don't participate in fast fashion as all the clothes I get I wear very frequently even up to weekly if I really like the item. I am still able to express myself despite getting clothes not as often, I do not participate in trends and I do not really know anyone who buys fast fashion because of trends. I have never used shein so I think that is the best action I've done to avoid fast fashion. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:37 PMReducing food waste is a major goal when I think about this because it feels wrong to throw away perfectly good food, Also I hate to waste food that my family or myself bought because it's just a waste then. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Cook With Sustainable SeafoodWhat did you cook and how did it turn out? Can you share a recipe on the feed for others to try?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:33 PMThe fish my family eats is usually sustainable from what I assume though I looked up that Trader Joes is not very sustainable so maybe I could be doing more research into the storebought fish that my family buys. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Household Carbon FootprintAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 7:30 PMBy driving less and travelling less often we could set back our carbon footprint. Also by eating less meat, it says we could set our carbon footprint back more but these are all very difficult to achieve. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 3:26 PMIn APES we had to learn different types of energy and I was assigned biomass. I've never heard of it before until now but it makes sense, I was surprised how it was considered clean even though you're burning the environment. It is better than some sources especially if it is a crop field needing to be replenished. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 3:24 PMI've learned about how the ocean can produce electricity by the waves bringing a bouy up and down from the waves. They're not as productive as sources such as nuclear but another source of clean renewable energy never hurts exactly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the CoastWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Reef Tusa 5/07/2024 3:23 PMI had a birthday party at the beach on Saturday last week. I brought people to the beach from 1-6 so 5 hours. Even though I was there for fun reasons I saw these jellyfish looking animals on the shoreline and remember seeing something about them on intagram, they're called manowar or something I believe.
