Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 120 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Purchase a Carbon Offset
Efficient Aviation
If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.
Land Sinks
Research Peatlands
Peatland Protection and Rewetting
I will spend 20 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Research Bottom-Trawling Seafloor Impacts
Seafloor Protection
Each day, I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about how bottom-trawling impacts on the seafloor.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Kaitlyn Tunick 3/23/2024 8:54 PMI felt like it was important for me to make this contribution because While I had no other option, I still wanted to give back to the Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Kaitlyn Tunick 3/11/2024 6:49 PMI've spent over 60 hours with Monterey Bay Whale Watch for my internship this semester so far. I have learned so much about the bay and the organisms that call it home, and have learned about the impacts that we have on this ecosystem.-
Suzanne Worcester 3/20/2024 4:50 PMWonderful opportunity to be out on the water!

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Kaitlyn Tunick 3/07/2024 12:01 PMWetlands and peatlands act as important biodiversity hotspots. They act as natural filtration systems and provide flood protection, and their inhabitants (food and shellfish) provide economic and food security for the surrounding communities. They are also carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (storing 1/3 of the world's carbon). By protecting wetlands we protect our planet. We can make a difference in the conservation of wetlands by participating in cleanups, using phosphate-free detergents, and advocating for the protection of these areas through community education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Research Bottom-Trawling Seafloor ImpactsWhy is protecting the seafloor important?
Kaitlyn Tunick 2/28/2024 5:46 PMThe seafloor is the base for the sea!! Protecting it allows for the protection and conservation of its inhabitants and ecosystems inside.
