Paris's actions
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 2 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 45 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Paris Tharp 3/27/2025 8:07 PMYou can refuse to use unnecessary items or packaging, like plastic straws, bags, or single-use items. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Paris Tharp 3/25/2025 12:36 PMI have noticed the small details one might miss while rushing through their day, such as the sound of birds, the scent of flowers, or the texture of different surfaces beneath my feet. I enjoy the peacefulness and the chance to clear my mind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Paris Tharp 3/25/2025 12:32 PMSpending more time outdoors enhances your sense of place by deepening your connection to the environment through observing. As I observed the ecosystems at Lovers Point, I noticed the rhythms of nature and the local wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Paris Tharp 3/13/2025 12:29 PMI chose to visit Asilomar State Beach. I learned that Asilomar is part of the Asilomar Dunes Natural Preserve, a protected area where rare plant species, like the endangered Monterey pine, grow. This area also supports a range of birds, including migratory species, and you can spot seals and sea otters in the waters nearby. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Paris Tharp 3/13/2025 12:26 PMSpending time outdoors and engaging in nature-based activities like planting trees can lower stress levels and boost your mood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Paris Tharp 3/13/2025 12:23 PMI could reduce my consumption by buying fewer things and cutting back on single-use items like plastic bags and packaging.
