Reduce Food Waste

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

I slept a lot better after going on a 90-minute walk. Even if my walk was an hour or less, I was calm and able to clear my head.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Using smaller plates could help us eat less. Sometimes if we have a bunch of food on our plate, we feel like we have to try to eat all of it even if we are already full.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would rather spend it on gas or put it towards my tuition.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I've started walking to work, and I noticed that I am calm once I clock in. Usually I start my shift a bit stressed and restless; it's a nice switch. If I go on a hike, I feel more at peace. There are no time constraints, and I can listen to birds and rustling. It is more relaxing, for me, to walk in nature and not around the city.
