    The global warming potential of refrigerants, particularly hydrofluorocarbons , is significant and frequently thousands of times higher than that of CO₂. They accelerate climate change by trapping heat in the atmosphere when they leak. Because supermarkets use big refrigeration systems that often leak refrigerants that they have an enormous effect on this issue. Leakage is increased by aged machinery, poor maintenance, and opening refrigerated cases constantly. Also, refrigeration's high energy usage, increases their entire carbon impact.
