REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/30/2025 10:51 AMI learned that tidal energy is more reliable but people have less access to it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/29/2025 11:19 AMMicroturbines could be installed at facilities in high elevations e.g. near Grandfather Mountain, because there is a lot of wind there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Chloe Sobremonte 4/23/2025 11:08 AMI have heard of biomass technology from wood, and I was surprised that you can use manure. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/23/2025 10:39 AMI believe that publicly investing in geothermal energy is the most feasible to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/09/2025 6:31 AMI feel more full whenever I eat whilst practicing mindfulness because I am paying more attention to what I am eating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/08/2025 8:52 AMI've noticed how nature is transitioning from winter to spring. I have enjoyed the feeling of getting sunlight. More sidewalks could make my walks more enjoyable instead of walking on the side of the road or in the dirt. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/07/2025 5:44 PMPeople in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places because they make more money, which leads to more variety of food when compared to other places. While consuming meat provides our bodies with nutrients, it is resource-intensive and contributes to many GHGs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/03/2025 4:08 PMAsheville, NC (where I grew up) is an urban area in which many people use private vehicles (i.e., cars) for transportation. I was raised to think that many types of public transportation are dirty, but I was proved wrong. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Chloe Sobremonte 4/02/2025 10:45 AMNo, I have not heard the term silvopasture until now. I think that the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the environmental benefits. This is because you can cut down carbon emissions by 5-10 times by using silvopasture. I think that the biggest disadvantage is the cost of silvopasture. This is because I imagine that the cost of raising pasture in an area with trees would be far higher than in a regular area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Chloe Sobremonte 3/31/2025 5:49 PMI learned that family planning can provide economic stability and a good quality of life (e.g. pursuing educational and career aspirations w/o interruptions). Needs can differ in different places based on the culture, economy, and government.
