  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/22/2025 8:04 AM
I can help by helping to stop degrading activities such as agricultural conversion and drainage, and restoring the conditions required for peatland formation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/17/2025 8:53 AM
I learned that refrigerants can destroy our ozone, and contribute to climate change big time if they are released into the atmosphere. Supermarkets contribute to this impact because they cause a lot of refrigerant leakage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/15/2025 10:32 AM
There are three things I could check: that the project is verified by a trusted organization, that it is sustainable in the long term, and that I understand exactly what the project does, preventing supporting anything that has negative intentions or backfires. I can increase my understanding by looking at where it is and what needs to be done in that area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:53 PM
I would rather use it to pay off my house or help pay bills. It's not much in those terms, but it would help. 1500 dollars is a ton for what it is though, that would be like burning a stack and a half.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:49 PM
I talked to my neighbors. I really enjoyed that. If there were more flowers and pretty stuff I would have enjoyed it more though.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:46 PM
I usually feel better, it means that meat production is hurting our planet less, and that is good for the people in it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:28 PM
When I'm focused on eating I tend to eat a lot slower and enjoy my food more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:24 PM
People in richer countries eat more meat because it is more widely available to wealthier people. Eating more meat negatively impacts how our bodies by raising cholesterol and rates of obesity, our planet by destroying natural resources and hurting ecosystems, and other people by creating a giving poorer countries less food security.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Eliot Smith Williams's avatar
Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 4:19 PM
Because it means that we don’t need to throw away food immediately after the use buy dates, and helps us shop smarter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

Eliot Smith Williams 4/08/2025 7:44 AM
There is a need for family planning because it is a human right. Having access to family planning would be a big factor in women's empowerment and gender equality, and would reduce poverty across the globe. Countries with more wealth have more access to family planning. In developing regions, 257 million women are not using safe or effective family planning methods, mostly because of a lack of access to high quality education.
