  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Cook With Seaweed
What recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 12:09 PM
I'm going to try making fried rice with seaweed.

    • Tonia Wu's avatar
      Tonia Wu 6/26/2024 5:37 AM
I've thrown a lot of random stuff into fried rice but never seaweed! I'll have to try this too...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 11:56 AM
"Repurposing" is a big one for me. I think finding a cool new life for things that have run its original course is very beneficial for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 11:48 AM
Eating more fruits and vegetables, to me, is great for lessening my waste output. Many of these do not have plastic packaging, and can be disposed of naturally or within a composter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 11:47 AM
I am a vegetarian, so I keep away from meat at all times. Eating less meat allows me to diversify my meals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 11:45 AM
I like to eat outside during lunch breaks. The nature allows me to be more present.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 8:13 AM
Biochar can have beneficial effects; in that it can support soil and plant growth.

      Lydia Roe 6/25/2024 8:38 AM
I find horticultural charcoal to be great for my houseplants. My Philodendrons, Monsteras, and other Aroid vines love the chunky texture for aeration and the chemical benefits of decreasing chances of rot/pests. Win-win!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 8:03 AM
I think whenever I go to the supermarket to buy fish, I need to do my homework beforehand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 8:02 AM
I love skyscrapers. I think they can be an efficient use of space, especially in contrast in suburban sprawl. It would be great to use these turbines on these buildings.

    • Samantha Niven's avatar
      Samantha Niven 6/25/2024 10:19 AM
While they're an efficient use of space, skyscrapers unfortunately augment the urban heat island (UHI) effect that often exacerbates environmental justice issues that urban overburdened communities face. A mix of micro turbines, green roofs (that absorb both heat and stormwater), and solar panels (which also absorb heat) might be effective ways to incorporate microturbines without perpetuating UHI.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 8:00 AM
I have! I think biomass technology needs more investment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Evan Shreffler's avatar
    Evan Shreffler 6/25/2024 7:59 AM
Using local places such as thrift stores or commissioning people close to where you live for projects.
