REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Isabella Schubert 3/12/2024 7:46 PMAlthough utilizing greener automobiles can reduce exhaust emissions and enhance public health, there are other benefits to driving a more fuel-efficient car. We will save money if we stop buying fuel or gasoline to regularly fill up our gas tanks. The electric vehicle requires no maintenance since it runs on a battery, whereas an internal combustion engine vehicle requires monthly payments to be operated. This makes the electric vehicle a more cost-effective option. Less gas is needed to travel the same distance in fuel-efficient cars. We spend less on gas and reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions when we burn less gas. Making conversion to fuel-efficient cars is advantageous for the environment and personal finances since it saves money while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Isabella Schubert 3/12/2024 6:56 PMI work at a horse farm where I teach horseback riding lessons. While my job has a sufficient amount of sustainability practices, there is plenty of room for improvement. Nitrogen and phosphate are two examples of greenhouse gases found in horse manure. Although spreading manure is already practiced to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, my job site should utilize this technique every day rather than only once a week. Additionally, urease inhibitors should be added, and the stored manure should be covered, to further minimize greenhouse gas emissions. The absence of waste management at my place of employment is another significant problem I see. There is simply a garbage can to throw everything in because there isn't any recycling on the property. A few recycling bins placed throughout the building would go a long way toward preserving our natural resources. The development of trees and other plants at my place of employment should be another implementation. To make the facility level and clear, several trees had to be pulled down. We could substitute the trees that had been taken out. This will raise the atmospheric concentration of oxygen and enhance the quality of the air. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Properly Dispose of RefrigerantsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Isabella Schubert 2/27/2024 8:45 PMI address my feelings of concern about climate change in conversations with my friends and family. This topic is brought up frequently as it is a worry of mine about the damage we are doing to our environment. I encourage all my friends and family to take the small daily actions they can to pull their weight in helping the worsening problem. However, I feel like the way I'm addressing my feelings about this climate crisis is not enough. Now that I am in this class and also have a concentration in sustainability as my major, I want to get more involved. Being a part of classes like this gives me the opportunity and motivation to learn about what more I can do to help make positive shifts of habit. I know that seeing a big change will take time, but it will feel better knowing the things I can do personally to shrink my carbon footprint, compared to doing nothing and feeling anxious over it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Isabella Schubert 2/27/2024 8:08 PMThe difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empowers me to make better decisions by limiting food waste and preventing food poisoning. I have learned that the best-before date is based on the quality of the food. This product can still be used, but the quality will decline. Use-by is based on the safety of eating the food. this is the final date for when the product should be used and should be thrown away after that date. Sell-by is not for safety, it tells the store how long to keep the food on display for. The use-by date seems to be the most helpful as it gives a specific time of when the product can be consumed until. There is no question about how long it is good for after, which avoids food poisoning. Knowing the difference between these terms helped me to reduce my food waste. I was under the impression that all of these terms meant the same thing, so I would throw out any foods past the date, regardless of the term. Knowing the distinction now, I can still use items with sell-by and best-by past their date without them going to waste.
