SiA Homework for Sept 4 - PRACTICE POST
Write an Ecochallenge POST to our team, briefly stating how you currently commute to Vanier. In Quebec, because we have a lot of hydro electric power, one of the main source of carbon emissions is from transportation. What commuting options do you have that would be healthier for you and the planet? Will you be considering any changes for this semester? If so, select or create an EcoChallenge action. If not, explain what your particular challenges are and what you could do to help other people in your situation (e.g. organise car sharing, propose a bus shuttle, etc.)
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Zero-Waste Cooking
Reduced Food Waste
I will cook 3 meals with zero-waste each day.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Aquaculture
Improved Aquaculture
Each day, I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about sustainable aquaculture.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
Reduced Food Waste
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Sella Saatjian 11/12/2024 6:40 PMNOVEMBER 13I did find that sometimes, I find the Eco-challenge experience difficult, maybe one thing that was hard for me was remembering to do them, I learned many different aspects of nutrition or electricity, I also did some research and found some things that I was not aware of before, I do think that my efforts do help make a difference for some things, I participated in this challenge alone if my family members were participating with me, maybe it would have been more encouraging for me, I hope I continue some of the new habits I got with this challenge, a world without fossil fuels would I think be beneficial for our planet, some positive consequences would be, for example, since fossil fuels pollute our air, if we have no fossil fuels, we would have better air quality, we would also have lower water diseases, one negative consequence I can think of is maybe the job losses in the workforce with fossil fuels, other than that, I think in general, we would have more positive consequences than negative. -
Sella Saatjian 10/22/2024 7:57 PMthanksgivingthe overall message I get from these 4 videos is that they all talk about our carbon footprint and how that affects our earth, some things that I am grateful for that do not negatively impact our environment are the time we can spend outside with nature, which has no harm to the earth like taking walks for example, another thing is having deep connections with people and connecting with people, bonding with people, another one is working out, having the possibility of moving my body without doing any harm to our planet, another one is having pets which have no harm to our planet, the ways degrowth can improve my life is by making my lifestyle more sustainable, try to buy local foods and be more aware of the actions we take with everything In our lives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Sella Saatjian 10/08/2024 6:08 PMI learned that eating less meat and eating more fruits and veggies causes fewer cancer risks, heart diseases, diabetes, and many more health benefits, I do not think that me eating less meat affects other people individually, but for our planet, fruits, and veggies use less energy than animal-based foods, also eating a more plant-based diet does less harm to our animals and our ecosystems, which is better for the planet. -
Sella Saatjian 10/02/2024 8:06 AMthe value mass demonstration is a good way to protest against whatever causes concern to you, the climate march is a good example of a mass demonstration showing a group of people, coming into one group and marching for what is right, after reading the A just transition, I see how Quebec is trying to spread the just transition concept, it explains how climate change will have a huge impact on Quebec, it also explains how Quebec has to have a partnership between the first nations and the Inuit people so they can be benefited from the climate transition.
I also found this poster online and thought it spoke to me, explaining how the younger people are the ones who have to take control of what our "leaders" did to ours-

Sella Saatjian 9/25/2024 9:36 AMAfter watching the video from Greta Thunberg, I think it is interesting to see that the video was done 5 years ago and we still have not made any changes to help our ecosystems, or have not helped the climate changes that are being done to help our earth. This video sparked me to do some research on our earth's ecosystem and whatever is happening, one thing that caught my attention was that we have an island on the Pacific called "the Pacific Garbage Patch" which I think is the most absurd thing that exists and is hard to believe that it even exists.

here is also a video that explains it in more depth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Sella Saatjian 9/17/2024 6:26 PMWEEK 5
usually, whenever I eat alone, I watch something on my phone or scroll and don't pay attention to my surroundings, I feel like I don't even pay attention to the food. I eat fast, but I practiced not eating with my phone and rather journaling whilst eating, which helped slow down my eating, and pay attention to my food and actually enjoy my food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Sella Saatjian 9/10/2024 7:38 PMthere are many ways to use an entire vegetable without throwing away the scraps, for example, let's say you were to use carrots for a recipe, instead of throwing away the skin, you can freeze them and make a vege broth and with the carrot tops, you can make maybe a sauce or mix it with pesto, there are a lot of ways you can use a whole vegetable including the scraps, you just have to be creative and find ways to use everything without throwing them away, you can even search online to get some ideas. -
Sella Saatjian 9/10/2024 5:38 PMWEEK 4:
Hi, my name is sella, one of my interests is trying my best to help others in any way I can, I am also in the social science program, majoring in child studies. One idea I have for my sustainability project is a recycling project idea, where we can help people recycle more, be more aware of what and where they are throwing away, and find ways to reduce the waste in our cafeteria, we can also spread more awareness on recycling. Another idea can maybe be composting, like having a bin to compost things, rather than throwing them away in a random bin, something that is easy and accessible for everyone-
Richard Klopp 9/10/2024 6:36 PMIf you are interested in recycling, start by learning about the effectiveness of recycling different materials. For metals, glass, and paper products it makes a lot of sense, but for most plastics you might quickly come to the conclusion that it is better not produce them in the first place.

Sella Saatjian 9/04/2024 5:49 PMI think the sustainability action plan was a good plan, full of ideas, I think what Vanier is trying to do is very good for our school, I think Vanier is doing an okay job of implementing different ways to promote less waste and so on, one example is the use of plastic water bottles which are not sold at Vanier, we are supported to bring reusable water bottles instead, which I think is a good way to reduce waste, there are also bins outside the classes that are separated in the three different components to support throwing trash in the right bin, one thing I could do is maybe cleaning up trash, learn more about our garden at Vanier and helping out and also I think spreading more awareness about this topic. -
Sella Saatjian 9/04/2024 3:48 PMI currently commute to Vanier with my car and have been for the past 2 years, the car is the easiest and fastest option for me, but I can maybe try taking the bus I would also save some gaz and pollute less.
