Antonio's actions
Electricity
Communicate With My Elected Officials
Onshore Wind Turbines, Offshore Wind Turbines
I will write or call 5 elected officials telling them not to support fossil fuel subsidies and instead support wind energy generation.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 45 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Transportation
Test Drive an Electric Bike
Electric Bicycles
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.

Antonio Rovira 3/20/2024 12:26 PMIm not logging everything I am eating but I do think the average amount I am eating per day is going down which is great. I have begun trying to eat more slowly which I also think helps me feel more full while eating less. -
Antonio Rovira 3/20/2024 12:25 PMI attempted to call the offices of multiple local and federal legislators but did not get an answer. I left voicemails describing how the switch to greener energy options not only benefits the environment but would also create many jobs and bolster the economy. Hopefully at least one hears what I had to say. -
Antonio Rovira 3/20/2024 12:23 PMI continue to log my food waste and each time I do I feel bad. I am continuing to take smaller servings but sometimes the food at the DC is truly just not good or flat out gross and I cannot force myself to eat it. I genuinely believe the DC would have less food waste if their food standards went up. -
Antonio Rovira 3/14/2024 10:39 AMI have been doing very well with eating smaller portions and not wasting any food. It feels good because I am both reducing waste and the overall amount I am eating which is also something I have been trying to do. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Test Drive an Electric BikeHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:18 PMOverall, I have not driven very much. For most of my life I have used a skateboard, a bike, or my legs to go places, especially short distances. I am very glad I made those choices when I was younger because now it is built into my routine and who I am. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:16 PMA lot of deforestation and habitat destruction is being done to create space either to raise cattle or food for them. The consumption of beef is directly connected to that. Purchasing and eating less meat contributes less to climate change and deforestation.-
Suzanne Worcester 3/20/2024 5:07 PMand also less pork too.
Awesome!

Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:14 PMRecently, I have been doing a lot of consideration when it comes to my diet and how it contributes to climate change. For one, I realize I consume a lot of beef. My father is Argentinian and a large part of Argentinian culture is meat, specifically beef. It is something that we enjoy but eat too much of. I also have been considering where my food waste goes. At home, we usually do not compost. All that food waste ends up in landfills and is turned into methane instead of carbon dioxide because of anaerobic conditions. Overall, I have been and will continue to reduce my contributions to climate change, specifically within my diet.-
Suzanne Worcester 3/20/2024 5:09 PMI had an Argentinian colleague at Berkeley and remember the heavy beef focus. A big challenge is how to honor cultural norms and be sustainable on our changing, warming planet? Each person figures out what the means for them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Food WasteAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:10 PMThat money could easily go to housing or bills like electricity and water which are also vital for comfortable living. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:09 PMEating smaller portions is shown to help reduce overeating and weight gain. Eating slower also helps you feel more full instead of eating a lot rapidly. -
Antonio Rovira 3/07/2024 1:07 PMElectric bikes have several benefits, as well as some possible drawbacks. The use of an electric motor not only extends the range of the bike but also allows for people who may not be able to use a regular bike to still ride. Biking also leads to a lower carbon footprint. Switching to an electric bike, especially for short trips, will significantly reduce the amount of carbon you would make if you were to drive instead. One potential drawback is the price. Electric motors and the components needed to make them work can often be expensive and out of some peoples' budgets. Still, switching to an e-bike can be a very ecofriendly choice.
