  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/22/2025 9:18 AM
Besides sequestering carbon, biochar can improve water retention, make nutrients more available and greatly reduce the need for fertilizer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/22/2025 8:46 AM
Refrigerants, used in AC and food cooling cause the earth to warm faster. Supermarkets have lines and lines of refrigerators which is not good for the warming of the earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/21/2025 5:23 PM
Yes. In my family we can drive our car a bit less, change some old lightbulbs and start washing our clothes in cold water to name just a few to reduce our carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/21/2025 5:07 PM
We eat more meat than those in other places because of the higher costs accosiated with raising meat. This increase in meat is very unhealthy for our bodies, the planet and other people's beliefs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/21/2025 4:44 PM
Eating smaller portions reduces food waste because less is thrown away. This leads to less need for trash and other sanitary services which is even more of a conservation of resources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/09/2025 7:47 AM
There are a number of attributes you should consider before purchasing a carbon offset. For starters, you should consider the credibility of the group you are purchasing from, do they actually do their offsets or are they just greenwashing. You should also consider the methods they use for offsetting the carbon – are they planting trees or are they using mechanical carbon capture machines. Finally, you should consider if there is a way to do your objective with less carbon in the first place, instead of just offsetting it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/08/2025 7:36 AM
I learned about the importance of family planning towards reducing carbon emissions and poverty. As girls and boys grow up, they need to be taught about family planning – the idea that people are in charge of deciding when they want to have children and how many. When people are educated on this, less children are born to young mothers which goes a long way towards reducing poverty. Reducing poverty and overpopulation are very important for reducing carbon emissions – less people equals less demands for resources.

Different people in different places have different needs. In developed countries like China and America populations need education and family planning and other similar things, but not in the same way that undeveloped countries like Chad or Guatemala do. Undeveloped countries need the bare basics to begin to drag their populations out of poverty, while we generally need more specific help towards excelling instead of surviving. However, we can’t forget the people and areas in developed countries who still do need the basics towards alleviating poverty.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/07/2025 7:53 AM
Women who are impoverished in our community are more likely to miss school because they need to work, or watch their family. Women in general in our community face bad listeners from men, differences in pay, and greater difficulty in progressing through society.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/04/2025 7:56 AM
To make our Asheville’s climate action plans more equitable we must understand the existence and impact of green gentrification. As we improve neighborhoods we must ensure that we also build affordable housing, use rent control to keep current units cheap and invest heavily in public transportation which keeps neighborhoods equitable for all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Henry Xavier Pope's avatar
Henry Xavier Pope 4/03/2025 7:41 AM
In order to protect peatlands you should consume products that don’t contain palm oil or other components whose production necessitates the destruction of peatlands. Palm oil is in a large amount of things we consume, from food to cosmetics but there are palm free, or sustainably produced palm alternatives.
