Shannon's actions
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
Reduced Food Waste
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Industry
plastic reduction
I will figure out how to make my favorite coffee shop drink at home and find a reusable container to drink it out of. This will save me money and reduce my plastic use, as well as reduce my carbon emissions from my car, because I do not drive to purchase a drink every morning.

Shannon Perrine 10/31/2025 2:40 PMI saw bioluminescence in the water at Fort Ord beach. We also picked up a few pieces of trash we saw, including two cigarette butts, a beer can, and an empty plastic bottle. ` -
Shannon Perrine 10/30/2025 4:15 PMToday I ate my breakfast undistracted and focused on eating slowly, and enjoying my food. I have realized over the course of this challenge that when I eat mindfully, I consume less food because I am more in touch with my body. This leads to better digestion and less risk of overeating. -
Shannon Perrine 10/14/2025 6:28 PMI rode my bike to Trader Joe's Monday morning to get yogurt for breakfast, and then after making it, I rode to the beach to eat said yogurt bowl. -

Shannon Perrine 10/14/2025 6:23 PMSo far, I am enjoying eating mindfully. It was difficult to keep myself from inadvertently reaching for my phone in the beginning, so I decided to leave it plugged in in my bedroom while I eat, and this has helped tremendously. Sometimes I find other ways to occupy my mind when I am eating. I actually packed a brunch yesterday and rode my bike to the beach to eat. I practiced mindful eating and was not distracted by my phone, and simply enjoyed my food and the world around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Shannon Perrine 10/06/2025 12:29 PMBeing on my bike does allow for a better connection to my environment. Instead of being sheltered inside a car, I can feel the climate on my skin and am able to breathe fresh air. I find I enjoy my commute more when I ride my bike; not only does the physical exercise get endorphins flowing, but it also allows me to focus more on the world I am in, rather than being focused on driving and the other vehicles I am sharing the road with. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Shannon Perrine 10/06/2025 12:16 PMToday was the first day I sat down to breakfast without my phone or computer as entertainment. I ate eggs and toast with avocado and parmesan cheese, and sat in the living room by the window in the sunlight. It was very peaceful, and a good reminder to slow down and take time to focus on the present.
