Practice the 5 Rs

Recycling

I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

The 5 Rs that I use most in my daily life when practicing to reduce my waste are reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle. I try daily to reduce my food waste and my plastic waste. I try to make conscious decisions not to pay for products with unnecessary plastics. I reuse and repurpose the plastic that can be in containers when they become empty. In my dorm, we recycle often from the waste we have. We also save the glass jars and to-go containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

With my roommates, we often carpool for the errands that we have. We either walk or carpool to the nearby Trader Joe's. I don't drive frequently during the week, but when I do, I often carpool with my roommates or friends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Other benefits can be for health as smaller portions can lead to less overeating. I would be saving money by buying smaller amounts of food and having more leftovers to eat on other days.

    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
What coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?

I went on a hike along the coast of Big Sur. It was amazing to see all the waves crashing against the coast. There was also a lot of seaweed in the water. As I was by the water, I thought about all of the carbon that is sequestered within it. The ocean is so vast and beautiful, but it is a major thing that is affected by climate change.
