It is a sustainability hierarchy designed to minimize waste and environmental impact. It prioritizes preventing waste over managing it, encouraging a circular mindset.
Here is a breakdown of the 5 R's framework:- 1. Refuse (Reject): Say no to unnecessary single-use items, excessive packaging, and promotional products to prevent waste from entering your home.
- 2. Reduce: Buy less, choose products with minimal packaging, and decrease consumption of items that lead to waste.
- 3. Reuse/Repair: Opt for reusable items instead of disposables (e.g., cloth bags, water bottles). Repair items like clothes or electronics rather than discarding them.
- 4. Repurpose/Rot: Re-imagine items for new uses (e.g., turning glass jars into storage) or "Rot" by composting organic waste to return nutrients to the soil.

5. Recycle: As a final resort, recycle materials like glass, metal, and paper properly to ensure they can be made into new products.
