Find out what’s happening in your neighborhood
While global and national actions get a lot of attention, it’s often at the local community level where individuals can have the greatest input and where change is most tangible. But every community is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I will spend 20 minutes finding out how my neighborhood, town or city is helping the environment and building local resilience.

Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

I will plan ahead to use paper products only made from post-consumer recycled paper for my home or office.

Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions, and opting out of junk mail.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Shetal Oza 6/10/2024 6:32 AMI have been a vegetarian my whole life, but since this challenge started, I have been making an effort to cut out animal-products. I have switched my usual yogurt breakfast to a coconut-based vegan yogurt, and I am enjoying it thus far. If anyone has suggestions for any vegan ice cream, please let me know!!-
Shetal Oza 6/12/2024 7:20 AMThanks for these suggestions folks!
Louisa - that sounds delicious and I will definitely have to make a DQ run sometime in the near future :).
Emily - I haven't tried the Ben and Jerry's non-dairy flavors, I will add it to my grocery list for this weekend. Also - love that you have chickens, that sounds so rewarding!! -
Emily Simons 6/12/2024 7:13 AMveggie for 20 years for me :-) i love ben and jerry's non-dairy versions. also i bought an ice cream maker and it comes out exactly the same with plant-based milks. it does still require eggs, i've never tried to make it with chia "egg" instead. I use eggs from my own chickens, so i feel like i've minimized the carbon footprint of my eggs (plus removed the cruelty aspect bc my girls are spoiled little divas) -
Louisa Lubiak 6/10/2024 3:23 PMI've been treating myself to Dairy Queen on Fridays at the end of the workweek, but I've gone dairy-free for health reasons. So, at DQ, I've switched from ice cream cones to the non-dairy Dilly Bar & frozen chocolate-dipped bananas.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Shetal Oza 6/10/2024 6:29 AMI've really been enjoying my daily walks, in fact, I've started walking/running before work! I've gotten to enjoy my neighborhood in much cooler temps compared to walking around 4/5pm, and seen a lot of neighbors I haven't seen in a while.
