Find out what’s happening in your neighborhood
While global and national actions get a lot of attention, it’s often at the local community level where individuals can have the greatest input and where change is most tangible. But every community is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I will spend 20 minutes finding out how my neighborhood, town or city is helping the environment and building local resilience.

Dylan O'Brien 6/24/2024 4:45 AMAfter having some friends over this weekend, I have noticed just how much of a larger issue recycling is. People are trying to recycle properly but are not educated enough as the system is far too confusing. I find myself getting confused sometimes. I have a separate recycling can in my bathroom, yet the amount of tissues and other materials that people mistake for recyclable material when they are actually meant for the regular trash is astonishing. Ultimately, it is not their fault. It is the system's fault for being overly complex and education in general for lacking on the subject matter. Food for Thought: How can we generate change in this regard and generate a shift with education that does not come across as preaching or condescending to our fellow adults?-
Lydia Roe 6/24/2024 10:39 AMI agree that we definitely need a better system of education for recycling! We can advocate for initiatives/programs locally if we want to make a change via the system.
On an individual scale, I think the solution is to ask people already in your life how much they know about recyclables, and if they seem interested, talk to them about the different resin codes, etc. I know many environmentally-minded people who get fooled by the cycling arrows on type 6 plastics (I definitely made some mistakes over the years). I think fostering some curiosity and having conversations with friends and people who already share that basic level of trust will have better chances of being seen as a peer rather than condescension from an ivory tower. "To change the minds of many, we must start with the minds of a few." -
Amanda Lopez 6/24/2024 10:29 AMI've noticed this too! It's difficult at times to be conscious about your own use and recycling while also keeping everything separate. I think a good start would be to start creating covers for garbage cans that shows the types of items that can be recycled there. Also, while it would generate more work in removing the garbage and replacing bags, we could also move away from the two can system and provide a third garbage can, just so that people can throw away recyclables that may not fit in with plastic or cardboard.

Dylan O'Brien 6/18/2024 11:33 AMToday I am thinking about how difficult it can be to decipher between greenwashing by companies and true environmental changes companies are making. It is always important to do your research! -
Dylan O'Brien 6/17/2024 5:57 AMThe Drawdown Ecochallenge has helped me realize how well I am already doing with my environmental footprint, however it has also continued to show me how much more room for improvement there is.-
