    Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
What did you learn about seaweed and its importance to coastal ecosystems?

I learned that seaweed plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of coastal ecosystems by providing food and shelter for a wide variety of marine life. Seaweed also helps improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and producing oxygen, which supports the overall balance of marine environments. I was amazed to learn that seaweed can help fight climate change by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and also protect coastlines by slowing down strong waves and preventing erosion. It’s incredible how something so simple can have such a big impact on the ocean and the planet.

Hi Simren! I love that you took the time to learn more about our coastal ecosystems! I grew up near the coast and most of my childhood camps incorporated something about the ocean. Kelp forests quickly became my favorite, if you ever get the chance to swim or dive in one, I would definitely recommend. It is so amazing to see the biodiversity first hand and really feel the power of mother nature.

Lately I’ve been trying to be more intentional about how I consume fashion, choosing to thrift or swap clothes with friends and roommates instead of buying new. It’s made me realize how much joy there is in giving clothes a second life. I also love passing things down to my younger sister knowing they’ll be worn and loved again.

Hi Simren! This sounds great! I love looking on Facebook and other online groups to see when local swap meets are, as I can usually find some great pieces for a fraction of the price of buying new. I also have younger siblings and love to see them wearing the clothing that I loved for so long.

Hi Simren! That's great that you are learning to be resourceful with your fashion. I love thrift shopping and swapping clothes with my sisters and aunt. We can save so much energy and resources by sharing and reusing clothes.

    Transportation
How does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?

Advocating for green vehicles is important to my family as we all drive either electric or hybrid cars. This shift wasn't just about saving on gas, it was about doing our part to reduce emissions and contribute to cleaner air for everyone.
I can get others involved by sharing my personal experience, as I believe change starts with conversations and showing people that sustainable choices are both practical and impactful.

Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

Every week, my roommates and I visit the Brentwood farmers' market to purchase our weekly produce. Being able to meet all the local owners and support their business is always so fulfilling and builds a sense of community. Plus, the fresh produce is so worth the time and money!

I grew up surrounded by nature in a small town in Northern California, where the outdoors shaped much of my childhood. But during my freshman year of high school, a wildfire tore through my hometown, burning down 36,000 acres and destroying over 7,000 structures. From then, the climate crisis stopped being an abstract issue—it was reshaping the world I called home. Today, I aim to make small changes within my lifestyle and motivate those around me to do the same because I believe our small actions can make a big difference in saving our ecosystems and nature.

Hi Simren, thank you for sharing your story. Growing up in Northern California, I remember how many horrible fires there were and waking up to thick smoke or a red sky. I had a few friends have their houses burn down, and heard many more stories of destruction from friends of friends and online. I am writing my Research project 1 on fire ecology, so will hopefully be learning a lot more about how to prevent ignition or decrease the spread, frequency, and severity of wildfires.
