Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Even though I already completed my one-time challenge involving seaweed, I still had left over chips that I've incorporated into other meals/snacks. Eating them with veggies is a great spicy kick, and I recently dipped them in hummus. The chili lime seasoning on them is truly incredible! The brand is called 'Gimme' for anyone who wants to know.

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

When I'm home, my friends and I drive our own cars to a lot of meet-ups. Putting this data into a carbon calculator contributed an ALARMING amount to my personal output. When I reduced my own vehicle contribution in the calculator, it lopped off an extraordinary amount. After spending a semester here without a vehicle and carpooling to every event, I've noticed how much more convenient it is as well. I will definitely advocate for my friend group to meet up at a specific location and send one vehicle down for a day trip (beach, casino, etc.).

What recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?

I made a chicken noodle dish with crushed up seaweed chips (chili lime flavor). The saltiness & crunch added to the meal was a great addition, and I will surely experiment in the future with other recipes.

My daily challenge is reducing my personal food waste, and over the course of 2 weeks, I've noticed that my grocery bills have been cheaper since becoming mindful of my eating habits! Whenever I go to the store, I think meaningfully about whether or not this item would go to waste - and 2 weeks ago they probably would have. I've been buying less produce expecting to use it, I only buy produce for meals I intend to prepare on the same day.

My daily challenge is reducing food waste, and I've noticed that most of the composting on campus is located in classroom buildings - not residential areas. It has been a challenge to effectively compost items like banana peels, paper cutlery, etc.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

As a member of a family of 4, I could think of a variety of outlets where we could spend that $1,500. That could help my brother and I pay for expenses while attending college, or my parents with paying off bills. It could allow all of us to invest in high-quality, sustainable clothing. It could allow us to invest in local food options that will be less likely to go to waste. There are so many ways we could spend the money, and instead, we're throwing it away. With this aspect as my daily challenge, I hope to become more self aware of how much food I serve to myself in order to limit waste.
