SiA Homework for Sept 11 - Intro Post
Please write a short post to introduce yourself to the class. Mention some of your interests and what program you are in. If you have some ideas for your sustainability project this semester, please share - you might find a collaborator! Inspire others with the EcoChallenge actions that you are interested in trying out. Include a photo of yourself if you like.
Transportation
SiA Homework for Sept 4 - PRACTICE POST
Write an Ecochallenge POST to our team, briefly stating how you currently commute to Vanier. In Quebec, because we have a lot of hydro electric power, one of the main source of carbon emissions is from transportation. What commuting options do you have that would be healthier for you and the planet? Will you be considering any changes for this semester? If so, select or create an EcoChallenge action. If not, explain what your particular challenges are and what you could do to help other people in your situation (e.g. organise car sharing, propose a bus shuttle, etc.)

SiA Homework for Sept 4 - PRACTICE POST
On Sept 4, we will have 3 guests come talk to us about sustainability initiatives at Vanier. In preparation, please read over VANIER'S 5-YEAR SUSTAINABILITY ACTION PLAN 2018-2023 and then write an EcoChallenge post that includes the following: - What do you think about the plan? Is it ambitious enough? Is there anything missing or superfluous? From your own observation and experience, how well is Vanier doing? List some questions that you would like to ask our speakers regarding Sustainability at Vanier? - Identify at least 3 initiatives that you are potentially interested in contributing to this semester and explain why. (Note there is a column labelled student involvement.) For more detailed information, you can also consult the 2020 VANIER ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT in the links.

amir megalaa 11/13/2024 8:39 AMEco challenge homework (November 13)
The Eco-Challenge more unusual than I thought. Trying to learn and make little changes every day showed me how much I didn’t know about stuff like reducing waste and saving energy. I tried to get my family involved, but it’s hard when everyone’s not on the same page having more people in it would’ve made it more motivating, for sure. I think I’ll keep some of these habits, like using less plastic and being careful with water. No fossil fuels would be the better option since we would have cleaner air, with less pollution but it will greatly affect traveling and some jobs. -
amir megalaa 11/13/2024 8:33 AMweek 10 (earn More About Geothermal Energy)
Geothermal energy uses the earth's heat to make power which is very good for the environment. Its a good investment because it will always be accessible and cleaner than fossil fuels. -
amir megalaa 11/13/2024 8:30 AMweek 9 (Research Barriers to Participation and Representation Family Planning and Education)
Girls around the world face big challenges like not having access to family planning or education all this hold them back from taking on leadership roles or making choices about their lives. Cultural norms often add extra pressure, making it even harder for them to be seen as equals. -
amir megalaa 10/21/2024 8:34 AMTanksgiving
The videos made me realize how our lifestyles, especially in rich countries, are pretty bad for the environment with all the carbon and ecological footprints that we leave. Degrowth, which means focusing less on making money and more on living simply, could actually make life better by reducing stress and helping the planet. -
amir megalaa 10/20/2024 4:04 PMEco challenge week 8 (Plan to Insulate)Making your home more energy efficient with better insulation is about keeping the heat in during winter and out in the summer. Adding stuff like weather strips around doors and windows helps stop drafts, and using thicker insulation in walls and the attic traps more heat. It’s an easy way to save on bills and keep the house comfy all year round. -
amir megalaa 10/20/2024 4:01 PMEco challenge week 7 (Learn About Aquaculture)Sustainable aquaculture is basically about farming fish and seafood in a way that doesn’t hurt the environment. It's all about finding ways to keep the water clean, use less feed, and make sure different species can live together. A cool method they're trying is growing different kinds of fish and plants together so that one’s waste helps the other grow. -
amir megalaa 10/09/2024 1:05 PMEco Challenge week 6 (Learn About Aquaculture)
Sustainable aquaculture is all about farming fish, shellfish, and seaweed in a way that doesn’t mess up the environment. It’s like growing food in the ocean without overfishing or polluting the water. They use cool methods, like raising fish in tanks that recycle water or growing seaweed, which actually helps clean the ocean. The goal is to produce seafood that's healthy for people and good for the planet, so we can keep eating fish without destroying marine life. I spent 10min a day trying to learn about it but this is the summary. -
amir megalaa 10/02/2024 9:23 AMEco challenge week 5 (green my job)
I learned from Drawdown's Job Function Action Guide that there are tons of tailored strategies for different jobs to help reduce carbon emissions at work. It covers things like improving energy efficiency by using energy-saving appliances and promoting recycling and composting to cut down on waste. The guide also emphasises getting coworkers involved through workshops and events to raise awareness about sustainability. Overall, it’s a great resource for making our workplace more eco-friendly and tracking our progress in fighting climate change. -
amir megalaa 10/02/2024 9:08 AMQuebec's principles for a just transition AND/OR PARTICIPATE in the Sept 27 Climate March
Going to something like the Climate March on September 27 is way more than just showing up with a sign. It’s about making noise together to get people in power to wake up and actually do something about climate change. When tons of people hit the streets, it’s saying and screaming that we dont agree with what is happening because it's affecting all of us. Protests are a way to remind everyone that climate change isn’t something we can ignore. Signs like "There is No Planet B" or "Our House is on Fire" might seem simple, but they stick in people’s heads. They make it clear that we’re serious, and that we want real change now. Even if one march doesn’t fix everything, it shows that a whole lot of people care and are willing to fight for the future. -
amir megalaa 9/25/2024 12:36 PMEco challenge Week 2
Week 2 was harder for me since my cousins from England came to visit us, so my time was restrained. I wanted to spend at leats 10 minutes searching on how my diet affected deforestation. But I couldn't do it since my time was restrained, plus all the other exams I had.
