    Land Sinks
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Rhett Mays's avatar

my current diet affects deforestation because I eat foods which contain palm oil. palm oil is bad because in order to harvest it we are causing massive rainforest deforestation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Rhett Mays's avatar
    Rhett Mays 4/22/2025 4:59 PM
To reduce the destructions of peatlands i can stop purchasing food products and hygiene items that contain palm oil and start buying things with the no palm oil label on them.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Rhett Mays's avatar
    Rhett Mays 4/22/2025 4:44 PM
in my community aka the US we have less female representation in government although were i live we have a female mayor witch is exelent.

      Isabela Vega 4/22/2025 9:57 PM
I agree that female representation in government is limited, and I would like to add onto this that at various job levels female representation is limited for certain cultures. For example, the Latinx community is heavily rooted in machismo which reinforces traditional household roles for women. This often makes entering the workforce and pursuing education difficult with cultural backlash and lack of family knowledge and support about such roles. The lack of exposure relates to environmental issues in that women in these communities are often not aware an knowledgable about potential for change and the effects of these issues.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Rhett Mays's avatar
    Rhett Mays 4/22/2025 4:40 PM
in order to make climate action plans fair and equitable we have to improve places without making the cost of living in eco friendly neighborhoods unmanageable for the people that already live there.

What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Rhett Mays's avatar
    Rhett Mays 4/10/2025 10:32 AM
I learned that refrigerants can be detrimental to our ozone layers. Supermarkets witch run off large refrigerators 24 hours a day are a big part of this problem.
