Sofia's actions
Electricity
Rooftop Solar Consultation
Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
After researching the incentives at the federal, state, utility, and local levels, I will contact a local installer/distributor for a solar panel installation consultation on my house.
Health and Education
Watch Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series
Family Planning and Education
I will watch Drawdown’s Climate Solutions 101 and share what I learned with others.
Electricity
Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaics, Distributed Solar Photovoltaics
I will use my spending power to reward companies leading in creating or purchasing green energy and incentivize others to invest more in green energy.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Cook With Sustainable Seafood
Improved Fisheries
Using the Seafood Watch guide, I will feature a sustainable seafood ingredient in a new recipe.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions, and opting out of junk mail.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meals each day of the challenge.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Industry
Practice the 5 Rs
Recycling
I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics; Reduced Plastics
I will avoid buying and using 5 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 8 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin practicing it in my own life.
Transportation
Test Drive an Electric Bike
Electric Bicycles
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Rooftop Solar ConsultationIdentify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:13 PMMany societies (like the US and China) prioritize economic growth and consumption-driven lifestyles, leading to excessive use of resources and environmental degradation (ex: the air quality in a lot of Asian countries). Yet, making informed and sustainable consumer choices by supporting eco friendly products can drive market demand for more sustainable alternatives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the CoastWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:12 PMI visited Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. I went to explore the coves and I found just about millions of tiny hermit crabs that were moving around in the pools. I even saw some without shells, but they looked slightly terrifying. I did some divine intervention and started moving them to different "neighborhoods" but I tried to move their families as well. I learned a lot about their lifestyles and their food web. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Cook With SeaweedWhat recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:09 PMI made a seaweed salad! It's just dried seaweed, soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, ginger, clove, onion, garlic and sesame seeds. To be honest, it wasn't very filling but I'd recommend it as a side dish. I probably will try cooking with seaweed again but more in bulk. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Cook With Sustainable SeafoodWhat did you cook and how did it turn out? Can you share a recipe on the feed for others to try?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:07 PMI made a salmon dish!! I made salmon and covered it with salt and pepper, then I put it in the oven for a bit. Meanwhile I made a potato and broccoli mash to go on the side. I squeezed a lemon over the whole dish! 10/10 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Support Companies Leading in Green EnergyEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:05 PMAn incredibly popular one, Tesla, creates cars and trucks of entirely green energy and only require a charge. I could maybe tell my dad to consider investing in green energy companies through stocks or mutual funds that focus on renewable energy and sustainable tech. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 3:01 PMMaybe I'll try to convince my parents to better insulate our home. : Improving insulation in walls, floors, and attics to minimize heat loss and enhance energy efficiency, especially in older houses (like mine) can improve the heat/ac and also potentially lessen the cost of energy as it is being unnecessarily wasted. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 2:59 PMI can pick several staple pieces to keep, such as a couple pairs of jeans of different colors because they are reliable and I don't need an assortment of blue jeans of different shades. Also, I'd pick simpler yet high quality pieces that don't disintegrate in the blink of an eye. I'll invest in timeless pieces and donate the rest of my current wardrobe. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 2:56 PMI want to prioritize my relationships with and building meaningful connections with family, friends, and the school community. I want to prioritize nurturing these relationships through quality time together and doing something active instead of being on my electronic devices. There is little genuine communication left in the world! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Watch Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 SeriesWhat was an inspiring thing you learned in Drawdown's Climate Solutions 101 Series?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 2:54 PMI really like that this organization doesn't limit its goal to simply restating the same goals as everyone else, but they actually came up with plans that could realistically be implemented. They also advocate for education in places without it so they can learn about this mission and perhaps even join in to support the cause. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Test Drive an Electric BikeHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Sofia Mauriello 5/15/2024 2:52 PMI often drive short distances if it's rainy or exceptionally cold. Because I live in San Diego, the weather really isn't that bad and I can usually walk or bike. Using an electric bike is definitely an investment for doing something like taking me a short distance, especially since I have a car that can really go anywhere. This being said, if I had the funds to make this choice I would!
