Milo's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Food Waste
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 33 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Health and Education
Learn about the Need for Family Planning
Family Planning and Education
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the need for family planning globally.
Industry
Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
Refrigerant Management
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the climate impact of refrigerants and what climate-friendly refrigerants are by using the links below.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Cattle Farming
Improved Cattle Feed; Improved Manure Management
I will spend 60 minutes researching cattle feed and manure management, or visiting a dairy farm to learn about their farming practices.
Land Sinks
Forest-Friendly Foods 1
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will spend at least 60 minutes researching the impact of my diet to see how it contributes to deforestation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn About Aquaculture
Improved Aquaculture
Each day, I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about sustainable aquaculture.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 25 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Conservation Agriculture, Regenerative Annual Cropping
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the need for more regenerative agriculture.
Land Sinks
Learn More about Silvopasture
Silvopasture
I will spend at least 30 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Milo Masem 4/30/2025 6:14 AMI learned that tidal energy is renewable and reliable, it's still in early development, but we can predict it better than wind and solar, the tides are always going in and out. With more research and funding, it could provide a great form of clean energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Milo Masem 4/29/2025 6:38 AMSo many places could house micro wind turbines, especially Asheville, with all of our parks and unique architecture, we can install them on buildings and open spaces. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Milo Masem 4/23/2025 2:51 PMI had heard of biomass before this, but I never knew you could use cow manure to power things. It's not the best for the environment, but very reliable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Milo Masem 4/23/2025 6:14 AMI could see how the cost of this is going because it's expensive and maybe try to get a heat pump some day if its not too expensive. I could also donate some money in a local effort for geothermal energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Milo Masem 4/22/2025 5:55 AMIf I were thinking in terms of family, I would use the 1500 to help with travel for me and my parents. It can get expensive so if we had smaller portions that we will eat all of maybe we could save a little money. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Milo Masem 4/02/2025 6:05 AMYes because we have been doing it forever on my grandparent's farm by putting the cattle up in the wooded mountain every summer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseClean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?
Milo Masem 4/01/2025 2:44 PMIt not only makes the community more healthy but is good for the ground and surroundings as well. Regenerative agriculture in Nashville could make a huge difference by being a way of feeding all the hungry people and the homeless here. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Milo Masem 3/28/2025 12:16 PMThe use by, best by and sell by dates impower me to make a smart decision when buying food by keeping me aware of when my food will go bad, what i need to freeze to keep good, and what I need to throw away. It also keeps me from getting myself sick. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat was the most interesting thing to learn about sustainable aquaculture practices?
Milo Masem 3/26/2025 7:49 AMThe most interesting thing about sustainable aquaculture is that it could really help feed the human population and that there are sustainable methods but we need to enact them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "Rs" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "Rs" make you feel?
Milo Masem 3/25/2025 5:02 AMI feel that I made a difference by just thinking about these while recycling alone. I would incorporate some of those more if I were a more artistic person, though when I was a kid I used to make lots of stuff out of recycled materials. incorporating these into ones lifestyle would be very effective.
