REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Joaquin Martinez 4/22/2025 8:24 AMI learned that both wave and tidal energy are viable, renewable, and predictable options for energy. They do well when compared to other energy sources as they are easily predicted and have a large capacity of power that is unrefined. However, it would cost a good bit of money to establish the facilities required to effectively turn these natural processes into energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Joaquin Martinez 4/21/2025 11:54 AMSpending more time outdoors can help me feel more grounded. This is because knowing what is around me can help me to better understand myself. It also does help me appreciate my surroundings as spending this much time just observing helps allow for much more detail and depth in my thoughts and observations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Joaquin Martinez 4/21/2025 11:50 AMI could reuse more packages and try to refuse more plastic wherever I go. This last "R" listed could be difficult as in some cases like school I have to use plastic chairs and I can't really refuse them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Joaquin Martinez 4/21/2025 11:48 AMI would rather use the extra money from wasted food for funding charities and giving those who need funds, money. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Joaquin Martinez 4/21/2025 11:45 AMI have noticed many things on my daily walks such as birdsong, a woodpecker, different types of plants, some raspberries, and houses around the paved road I was walking on. I have enjoyed these walks as an extra form of exercise and a reason to get out of the house. Not many infrastructure changes are needed to make my walks more enjoyable or possible along the different paths/roads I have walked along. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Joaquin Martinez 4/21/2025 7:50 AMI learned that refrigerants are very bad for the environment as they cause the ozone layer to degrade and let in more UVB rays which are very bad for our environment. Supermarkets are a big problem as they use lots of refrigerants in the refrigerated isles and sometimes they aren’t able to contain all of the refrigerants. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?
Joaquin Martinez 4/09/2025 8:03 AMYou should consider that these are only accountable for one metric ton of carbon emissions. You should also consider that these permits have a limit and only exist where a cap-and-trade system is used. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Joaquin Martinez 4/08/2025 7:51 AMI learned that family planning is needed and a very useful tool that should be available to humans everywhere. Poor family planning can cause more poverty and less education.
People in different places always need different things. However, this has never been more apparent than it is now. People are in some cases without anything and forced to do the best they can on their lack of nutrition, education, and shelter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and EducationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Joaquin Martinez 4/07/2025 8:02 AMThey aren’t able to play certain sports. This causes them to be underrepresented and less skilled in sports (sometimes) due to them not being able to play them at an early age. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildingsCities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Joaquin Martinez 4/04/2025 8:00 AMWe can implement government funded housing in areas like the River Arts District to make prices lower and Asheville greener at the same time.
