REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jose Marquez 10/25/2024 11:59 PMI have noticed on my daily walks that certain streets are not all that safe. There are side walks where tree roots have pushed the concrete up and it becomes like a ramp where people could potentially fall. There are also pot holes in some areas. For the most part, Salinas has clean flat streets and side walks but in the lower income neighborhood, some streets could use some work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Advocate for Solar InstallationHow does advocating for rooftop solar connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Jose Marquez 10/25/2024 11:56 PMSolar panels means clean energy and if we can change the way that we get energy then its to say that we could be potentially reducing carbon pollution. We would be reducing the biggest pollution factor we release. I would say I could convince others by introducing them to reliable companies with good contracts that actually allow homeowners to save money on their monthly bill and still benefit from clean energy. I think that if we want people to be on board, we have to offer them an effective incentive that will make a positive change for their spending. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's (or office's) energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Jose Marquez 10/25/2024 11:51 PMImproving my homes energy efficiency helps my family and I live out our values by allowing the heat in our home to stay in longer during the winter. If we are able to stay warm with keeping the heater on minimally, allowing us to save energy and ultimally save money. -
Jose Marquez 10/25/2024 11:46 PMToday I hiked Fort Ord for about 6 miles. I also took the city bus to work from my house which saved me 15 miles in my car. -
Jose Marquez 10/24/2024 11:19 PMI found out that the Tesla website also offers tax credits but it still isnt economical for me at the moment working part time and going to school full time. I think this type of tax credit can benefit someone working a full time job.-
Monica Amador 10/25/2024 7:44 AMI agree it is not feasible for everyone to switch to electric, but I think it is great that you are looking into it and see what options you have when you are ready to switch.

Jose Marquez 10/22/2024 11:04 PMI today I was able to get through all my meals without distracting myself with my phone or my tv. I am usually good about paying attention to my food or to something that is in front of me without getting distracted. What helps me stay focused or concentrated on one thing is being able to just constantly think about it. In this case, I this case, I always try to think of a new recipe to look for, or simply how can I cook better food. I think overall just focusing on one thing can bring a peace of mind because you dont have several things running in your head as your eating. -
Jose Marquez 10/20/2024 11:50 PMLiving in an apartment complex, I imagine that if everyone in each apartment switched to a solar water heater, this could make a big difference in fossil fuel-generated electricity. If I switched in just my apartment, I don't think it would make a difference, and I probably would pay more for the water heater than the water bill because we don't use a lot of hot water. One thing that I would like to do is talk to the owner of the apartments and see if she would be interested in switching everyone over. I will check in with you guys about this soon. -
Jose Marquez 10/19/2024 10:04 AMBy insulating my home, I decided to learn about where leaking points would be possible in my home, and I learned that most of the time, warm air can leak out through window seals, door weather strips, and even open areas in the attic or under homes. So one thing that I tried, is by checking all of window seals, and it turns out that a couple of my windows were slightly open and I could feel a slight cool breeze coming from my window. So one thing that I did to resolve this was by caulking the open areas in order to seal off the air. I also replaced by door weather strips and added a thicker thresh hold in order to prevent wind coming from my door when it is closed. Especially now that it is getting colder, I think it is important to understand these things because most of the time we use a heater when it gets cold. So by sealing open areas in my home, can allow heat to stay in the house longer and I wont have to use as much energy to warm up my home. -
Jose Marquez 10/17/2024 10:02 AMBack in 2019, I was hired as a canvasser for a solar company called Solar Solaris. My job was to go door to door, finding homeowners, and convincing them to consider buying solar panels for their homes. Most home owners shut me down because the monthly bill I was projecting for their home was more expensive than they were paying for PG&E. So I personally got discouraged on trying to sell solar panels because it seemed that people would end up paying more than their current bill, so it wasn't worth it. Now today since I have done research on improved Solar PVs, I see that there sees to be more benefits to getting solar panels in their home, especially as home owners. One website was able to mention ten benefits to adding solar panels to a home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Jose Marquez 10/14/2024 2:31 PMMost bus stops are very simple and it almost feels boring to just be there because there is just a sign and nothing more. Some don't even have shade structures or benches, and I think that we can make bus stops a little more lively. When I was working in construction full time, we landscaped a whole bus stop to have California native plants all around and we built a book box so people can donate or take a book. We also included three trees that will create shade for people waiting at the bus stop in the near future. I think that if we implemented using up dead space at bus stops to build gardens or ecofriendly stops can make a big impact on peoples decision to take a bus or not.-
Kenneth Slaysman 10/14/2024 4:27 PMJose, these are some really good ideas. It could even be done by local community volunteers without any public money needed.
