"I think dealing with the climate crisis starts with doing something big or small. Change happens when we take responsibility and try to make the world a better and fairer place for everyone. Even simple things like using less plastic, speaking up for cleaner energy, or helping out in your community can really add up."

Solomone Malafu 4/07/2025 12:25 AMGrowing up on Kauaʻi and being a Polynesian, I was raised with the understanding that we are connected to our environment; it feeds us, protects us, and holds our history. But today with where our environment stands now, with climate change, pollution and wasteful habits that connection is threatened. I joined this challenge because I come from a place and culture that is rooted and deeply values the land and ocean.Taking part in bettering our environment, I choose actions that reflect both my roots and my hope for the future like reducing waste, cutting back on energy use, and learning more about sustainable food systems. For example, I grow plants that I can eat such as breadfruit and others. I also support local farmers or fishermen that help supply natural fresh produce, and also help promote a more eco-friendly system. These may seem like small things, but they do add up. I want to do my part not just for the planet, but for my community and the generations to come after me.
Some of us today wouldn’t know where to start, which is okay because it doesn’t all happen at once. What matters is staying grounded in your “why” or “who” you are and supporting each other. Change feels a lot easier when we do it together.
