Katelyn's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
Reduced Food Waste
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 4 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Electricity
Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal Power
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.
Electricity
Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro Wind Turbines
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of micro wind.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Electricity
Learn More about Biomass
Biomass Power
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.
Electricity
Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
Ocean Power
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of wave and tidal energy.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Katelyn Lutman 10/27/2024 6:33 PMOther benefits that can come from eating and serving smaller portions can allow you to hit weight-loss goals, and can allow you to have more food for the remaining days. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Katelyn Lutman 10/27/2024 6:30 PMMy eating experience differs when I limit distractions because I am able to eat regular size portions, and not over-eat. Also, I find myself feeling more relaxed and being able to enjoy what I am eating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Katelyn Lutman 10/27/2024 6:26 PMConsuming more fruits and vegetables, compared to meat, can positively affect people on the planet because it helps the planet by conserving land, water, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is due to the lower environmental impact of plant-based foods compared to animal products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Katelyn Lutman 10/25/2024 7:22 AMIn terms of money, geothermal can be invested through money because homeowners pay over 5,000 dollars to support this type of energy. In terms of time, this type of energy has been invested through cooling and heating systems. In terms of advocacy, such problems of air pollution and water pollution can be affected through this type of energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Katelyn Lutman 10/25/2024 7:19 AMMy city is surrounded by grassland and is very farm-like. The best place micro turbines could be installed is open plains and water sources around the farm land. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Katelyn Lutman 10/25/2024 7:15 AMThe next thing I plan to do is spread awareness about this action to my peers. So they can also support energy efficiency. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal EnergyWhat did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?
Katelyn Lutman 10/25/2024 7:13 AMI learned that tidal energy is a energy source that converts the natural ocean tides into electricity. This compares to other energy sources because it is more powerful than wind energy, and overall it is more efficient and sustainable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Katelyn Lutman 10/25/2024 7:10 AMNo, I have not heard of biomass technology before this challenge. I learned that renewable plant sources are used to create biofuels.
