  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

A lot of food gets wasted by people at home. Chef Steven Satterfield says we should use the whole vegetable, like the skin and stems, when we cook.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/10/2025 3:23 PM
I learned that refrigerants, like the ones in fridges and air conditioners, can be really harmful to the climate if they leak into the air. Supermarkets use a lot of these cooling systems and if they are not careful, the gasses will escape and leak into the air.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/09/2025 9:14 AM
Carbon credits and carbon offsets are both ways to help the planet, but they work in different ways. Carbon credits are like tickets that allow a company to release a certain amount of pollution. If they don’t use all their tickets, they can sell the extras to other companies that need them. This system helps keep total pollution under control by setting a limit.

Carbon offsets are when a company or person pays for a project that helps the environment, such as planting trees or building clean energy like wind or solar power. These projects remove pollution from the air or stop more from being created. It's a way of balancing out pollution that has already been made. Before buying offsets or credits, it's important to make sure the projects are real and actually helping the Earth.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/08/2025 9:16 AM
I learned that family planning is really important because it helps people choose when to have kids. This lets women stay in school longer, get better jobs, and take care of their families in a healthier way. Without it, there can be too many people and not enough resources, which makes life harder for everyone.
People in different parts of the world have different needs. In some places, people need clean water, food, and health care, while in others, they need better schools and jobs. Some countries also need more access to family planning to help families stay healthy and safe.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/07/2025 9:36 AM
In my community everybody has done a great job of eliminating or decreasing barriers that exist to women’s equal participation and/or representation in my community. The barriers that we are constantly fighting is equal pay and some of the ways they are raised to think less of themselves based on out-dated beliefs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/04/2025 10:03 AM
Asheville can make its climate plans fair by listening to all people, especially those in low-income neighborhoods. They should make sure improvements like parks or clean energy help everyone, not just the rich. The city should also protect affordable housing so people aren’t forced to move when things get better. As cost’s rise it’s just going to push people out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/03/2025 9:37 AM
Even if I don’t live near a peatland, I can still help protect them by being careful about what I buy. I can check labels and try to avoid products made with palm oil unless it’s certified as sustainable. Using less paper and recycling also helps because it reduces the need for plantations that destroy peatlands. If I am with friends or family in a store I can enlighten them about the harsh truth about the harsh truth of palm oil’s. Palm oil isn’t inherently bad it’s the production process that is terrible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/02/2025 9:40 AM
Currently I am cutting, which is basically just watching what I eat, but most importantly cutting down calories. I don’t think my diet is currently impacting deforestation because I am mostly eating grass fed meat. I can increase my positive impact by sticking to the cut and watching out for those unequivocal names for palm oils as well as other things that impact deforestation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 4/01/2025 9:45 AM
I had never heard of the term Silvopasture before now. I think the biggest advantage of Silvopasture is action of maintaining it every single day. This will lead to the person being in shape, feel important, and keep you busy. This is also a disadvantage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
What did you learn from visiting or researching a dairy farm?

    Wilson Love's avatar
    Wilson Love 3/26/2025 10:06 AM
Dairy farming involves caring for cows, milking them regularly, and managing feed and waste. It also has environmental impacts, like water use and methane emissions, but it provides important nutrition and jobs for many communities. I went to Costa Rica and there was a cow farm there.
