Composting at JAC

The goal is to compost the parts of your meals that you don't eat while on campus. This can include all fruits, veggies, meats, oils (like salad dressing), breads, etc. - all food! Also, it includes used napkins and cardboard food containers. Please use the compost (usually brown) bins around campus, and take selfies or get someone to photograph you using the bins.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    - Use vegetable peels and skins to make homemade vegetable stock
    - Roast or sauté vegetable tops like carrot greens or beet leaves as side dishes
    - Chop and freeze vegetable scraps to add to soups and stews later

Composting food waste is essential for reducing landfill waste, which helps minimize methane emissions and combat climate change. It enriches soil with vital nutrients, promoting healthier plant growth while decreasing the need for chemical fertilizers. Additionally, composting fosters biodiversity by supporting beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Using effective compost bins, like those from JAC, can inspire others to adopt sustainable practices, as seeing the positive results of composting encourages community engagement as well.
