Find out what’s happening in your neighborhood

While global and national actions get a lot of attention, it’s often at the local community level where individuals can have the greatest input and where change is most tangible. But every community is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. I will spend 20 minutes finding out how my neighborhood, town or city is helping the environment and building local resilience.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 9:37 AM
I make an effort to go hiking and to enjoy the natural wonders whenever possible. I have a regular habit of hiking 3-5 days a week, but even enjoying the nature right in my community adds to my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 9:26 AM
The fact that i care enough to learn more about this gives me hope because it tells me that I am not alone, that other people care, that together, we can make a difference and live more sustainably.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Support a Community Garden
What are the multiple benefits of community gardens, including carbon sequestration? Why do these benefits matter to you?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 7:27 AM
Community gardens are wonderful as they are a meeting place to bring people together, encouraging and empowering people to grow their own food, and help to cut down on transportation from foods they may otherwise buy. These benefits matter to me because they lead us to a more sustainable future.

Especially for kids - it's so wonderful to see children involved in growing their own food in a community garden. I remember the first time I picked a cucumber as a child - surprised it had prickles on the outside!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 7:25 AM
Planting trees helps to create a better environment and encourages an understanding of the symbiotic relationships that we live here on earth
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 7:18 AM
I use public transportation, when possible, especially high-speed trains. They allow me to get where I need to go and not worry about parking. It is unfortunate that there are people who need help and are sleeping in the train stations. I wish they had housing and the support they need to live better lives and the side effect would be a healthier society as a whole, as well as train stations that more people feel comfortable using to commute.

    • Louisa Lubiak's avatar
      Louisa Lubiak 6/05/2024 6:09 PM
Yes, so sad, and some of the people sleeping in train stations are veterans.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Advocate For Greener Vehicles
How does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 7:15 AM

I will commit to learning more about deforestation so that I can make more mindful and sustainable choices
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

    Jennifer Lande's avatar
    Jennifer Lande 6/03/2024 7:13 AM
I use LEDs where able. Sometimes they hurt my eyes, so I do have one lamp that I prefer to use a different type of bulb with

    • Louisa Lubiak's avatar
      Louisa Lubiak 6/05/2024 6:06 PM
I've seen LED bulbs with different color "temperature" ratings, such as "cool" or "warm" so I wonder if using a bulb with a certain spectrum would be better for your eyes?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
