Industry

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.

DAILY ACTIONS

Industry

Practice the 5 Rs

Recycling

I will practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Grow your own veggies

Growing vegetables encourages a more sustainable way of living, giving access to fresh and nutritious produce. Homegrown produce can reduce packaging waste, cut down on transportation emission and also can be a relaxing and satisfying activity,

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Electricity

Learn More About Geothermal Energy

Geothermal Power

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of geothermal energy and consider investing in this technology.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Reduce Food Waste

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Go for a Daily Walk

Walkable Cities

I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

Understand the Difference “Best Before” and “Use By” dates on food packaging to reduce waste:

    Use by = about safety
    • Eat it by this date.
    • After this date, the food may not be safe to eat, even if it looks or smells okay.
    • Common on perishable foods like meat, dairy, and ready-to-eat meals
    • TIP: Freeze items like meat and dairy before their use by date — ideally on the day you buy them — and plan meals around foods that need to be used soon.

    Best before = about quality
    • The food is usually still safe after this date.
    • It may just not taste as good, be as fresh, or have the best texture.
    • Common on dry, canned, frozen, or packaged foods.
    • TIP: use your senses - Look, Smell and Taste before you waste! Many products last well beyond the printed date if stored properly and unopened.

    Some interesting facts on recycling:
    • By recycling 60 kg of waste paper, 1 tree can be saved from being cut down.
    • Glass can be remelted any number of times without losing quality, which saves energy.
    • A bicycle can be made from 600 aluminum cans.
    • Eyeglass frames can be made from 3 aluminum cans.
