This past week, I monitored my electricity usage by trying to note at least five times where I turned out a light or turned off an appliance when I didn't need it on, and when I would normally forget to turn it off. For example, whenever I went back to my room in my apartment, I turned off my kitchen light instead of keeping it on like I normally do. I also tried to unplug my devices whenever I didn't need them plugged in, and did my best to not plug in anything I didn't immediately need. I noticed that it didn't inconvenience me to do this at all, and it was quite simple to make this change. I commit to being more aware of my electricity usage every day, and trying to limit it wherever I can.

Hi Aanchal, I did the same thing for my water usage! I tried to always double check my tap before I leave, as it has a design where it's really hard to tell if it is completely closed. I totally agree with your point that being more careful about electricity is not a burden, and I also feel like being more mindful about all utilities would be very helpful!

Today, I researched various different woman and POC owned small businesses, and actually purchased from one as well! I read a great article which highlighted a number of woman-owned businesses, and came across two that really caught my eye. The first was Hero, which I realized I have already been using for quite some time for skincare! I was excited to learn that I had been supporting a woman-led business. The second business I looked at was Bonita Fierce, a Latina and woman owned online candle shop which produces natural, coconut soy candles. I really love purchasing sweet aromatics for my apartment, so I picked up some of their very unique mini candles, including their "Azúcar," "Abuela's bakery," and "cafecito con leche" scents. I am really excited to try these out, and excited to be supporting a really cool woman and POC-owned business!

That’s so cool, Aanchal! I love that you were already supporting a woman-owned business without even realizing it. Another amazing woman-owned brand is The GREAT., a clothing line co-founded by UCLA alumnae Emily Current and Meritt Elliott. Their West Hollywood store features vintage-inspired pieces that beautifully blend comfort and style. It’s always inspiring to see fellow Bruins thriving in creative industries like fashion.

In the past week, I monitored my use of plastics. I noticed that, while I didn't use too much plastic, my daily morning coffee was often served from the cafe in single use plastic cups, and I realized that all of that plastic use added up. I started going to a different cafe on campus, which uses compostable materials for both the cup and straw. I also found my reusable water bottle and started using that more. I noticed that my roommates and I kept plastic grocery bags in our apartment, so I decided to reuse the ones we already had for multiple purposes, like transporting my travel materials and toothbrush over my weekend trip. In all, this week of monitoring my plastics use definitely made me more aware of my plastics consumption, and helped me practice making more sustainable choices!

I love that you have been reusing plastic grocery bags! I would 100% try investing in a reusable grocery bag once you are through with reusing all of your plastic ones. Once I got my two cute ones that fold up in my backpack I have never looked back. Also, I love that you dug up your old resuable water bottle instead of purchasing a new one. Mine is also like my emotional support water bottle I've had her for so long :,)

Hi Aanchal, I have also been trying to monitor my use of plastics! I also have been noticing how much my roommate and friends use, trying to encourage them to switch to more sustainable options. My roommate and I had a stash of old plastic grocery bags, so we also started using those as trash bags instead of buying more. Randy also showed us a reusable bag he uses for lunch like sandwiches, and we bought some of those for our food and when we transport toiletries. Finally, this week I noticed my friend kept using plastic bottles just because he needed to wash his reusable bottle and hadn't yet. After a little push, he quickly stopped buying more plastic bottles and just put his in the dishwasher.

This past week, I also learned more about expiration dates and what each different type means. I've commonly been confused between "Best by", "use by" and "sell by" dates, so I went to the USDA website and navigated to the "Food Product Dating" page, and read the articles they had on the meanings and differences between the dates. I now know that none of these dates are safety dates for typical food products, and that "best by" refers to when the food will be of best flavor/quality. "Use by" indicates the last date recommended for peak quality food. Finally, "sell by" tells the store about food display for inventory purposes. However, what surprised me is that none of these terms indicate a need to throw away food past these dates. Rather, the USDA recommends that people inspect food for signs of spoiling, and be extra vigilant past these dates. Using this information, I will refrain from throwing food away just because one of these dates has passed, and instead inspect my food more carefully to ensure that I am limiting my food waste.

Hi! thank you for sharing this info! I was always confused on the difference between these dates. I have a bad habit of throwing out items when it's past the date but now I know to also think of that as a suggestion.

Hi Aanchal! This was interesting to read, as I know I'm someone who follows those dates on food packages pretty closely as an indicator of whether the food is still good to eat or not. Moving forward, I will make sure to consider those dates as a suggestion, but rely more on the actual state of the food.

Hi Aanchal, I did not know the difference between "best by", "use by" and "sell by" dates and just assumed that they meant that the food item will just be good until the date listed. It is very interesting that they all have different meanings and none of them have anything to do with when the food can no longer be consumed. I feel like this is very important knowledge to have to help reduce waste. Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed reading your post.

This week, I made a commitment to doing some more walking and really taking advantage of the mostly walkable city/community that we have here in Westwood. Normally, I will take my car to the store to be able to easily transport my groceries, but this week I decided to try to only walk to the store rather than use my car. I noticed that it was very nice to get some fresh air post-class, and get some exercise carrying my groceries home. However. I also noticed places around Westwood where we could really benefit from some sidewalk restoration, which would likely make it easier for more people to engage in walking as opposed to driving.

Hi Aanchal, it is great to know that you have been doing the same thing! I moved to a new apartment, and it is only about 5 minutes walk from my friend's place. As I tried to walk to their place, I found I haven't been walking in westwood for almost a year. I was great to get the fresh air and seeing people walking on the streets. I totally agree with the sidewalk restorationg project! I live on the verteran street, and the sidewalks are actually cracked

Hi Aanchal, I have been doing the same thing! My friend's car actually broke down earlier this year, so she could only walk to the store and she said she really enjoyed it so has continued to only walk. She explained that not only is it great to get some exercise and fresh air, but that it also encourages her to buy a little less more frequently rather than buy in bulk all at once. I started walking with her to the store and completely agree with her! I also notice so much more about Westwood when I walk around
