My sister is home for the weekend, and I'm realizing how difficult it is to continue sustainable practices in celebratory group settings.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Food Waste
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

This is money that could have been channeled into switching to solar energy sources within the family home.

I'm currently working on re-purposing plastic bags and containers so I don't have to throw them away and create waste that will take twenty to five hundred years to decompose. Last week, I bought hummus from a local vendor, but it expired this week. Usually, I would toss the hummus out in the container, but this week I chose to wash out the food waste and re-purpose the containers as tupperware for my snacks.

    Industry Practice the 5 Rs
What are some more "Rs" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

Another "R" I would add to this challenge would be "reflect." With the rise of fast consumerism and shopping apps like Amazon, I know too many people who are quick to buy items before considering the long-term repercussions of their purchase. This leads to a build up of things you once thought were a necessary purchase that are now collecting dust in the corner of your room. Reflection is key to sustainability, ask yourself, "Why do I think I need this?" before purchasing.

I agree. I think reflection is a key not to just sustainable living but to living life as a good global citizen.

Electricity Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

The Ecological Footprint Calculator allowed me to realize how much waste my family home produces daily as well as how imperative it is we switch to renewable energy as soon as possible. My parents and I are looking into installing solar panels to make our house more energy efficient, however, we're not sure how to go about it without breaking the bank. We're also working on reducing our food waste by only buying food we know we will eat.
