  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?

I do often drive to places not too far from me but after getting an electric bike I've been able to ride all over town. This has allowed me to rely much less on my parents to drive me especially to places that are close by.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:54 PM
Planting trees makes you feel like you're making a difference and that feeling is really nice. I was very content and zen post planting and much happier as I had not only gone outside and embraced the great weather, but made a difference while doing so.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:49 PM
Now that I know the difference I won’t be so hasty to throw away products that have “expired” knowing that I can still eat them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Education
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:46 PM
I have learned that family planning is actually essential to a successful career, let alone life. It allows women to have educational opportunities and make better decisions regarding their reproductive health and activity. This leads to a better overall life with more support and less risk at hand. The basic necessities are the same for most people, but on different levels. For example, someone can get by with food, water, and shelter, but minimal education which affects many aspects of your life. Health, education, climate, and economics along with other factors contribute to one's needs, just on a weighing scale. Depending on where you live, different needs are on different levels of priority, with people in places experiencing high poverty rates requiring only the basics, and people in richer climates requiring education and other less accessible needs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Buildings
Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:35 PM
I think the biggest thing is taking the low income housing into consideration and not displacing anyone, instead using unoccupied land to build parks or other beneficial structures keeping what's best for communities in mind.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:31 PM
Investing in carbon offsets should be funding projects that wouldn’t have occurred had you not supported them. If it occurred without your money the donation really isn’t doing anything for reducing carbon. Some services also might just be wasting your time especially if they aren’t verified and you are buying into a sham. Another thing to take into consideration is the time length of the carbon reduction, for example if trees are planted who is going to protect them and how long will they last.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/21/2025 5:20 PM
Besides my daily meat intake, most of my diet is Forest friendly with a lot of what I eat consisting of fruits and veggies. I can increase my positive impact by not supporting soy, palm oil, and other harmful products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/20/2025 12:43 PM
You can protect peatlands by not supporting palm oil companies and using alternative products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/20/2025 12:37 PM
I have always had access to a school bus and city bus which are great methods of transportation and my transportation behavior has matured through both.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

    Lucius Howell's avatar
    Lucius Howell 4/20/2025 12:24 PM
I feel much better and more content about my carbon output when I bike to places instead of driving.
