REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/26/2025 8:13 PMRefrigerants produce a special type of gas called Fluorocarbons. In fridges, it tends to be Hydrofluorocarbons. Compared to other greenhouse gases, they have a higher Global Warming Potential. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand SinksHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/25/2025 11:27 PMMeat is a staple of my diet, ranging from sustainable options like fish and chicken to very unsustainable ones like beef. Cow farming is a major source of deforestation due to requiring a lot of land. This endangers forests, which are already cut down for other resources, because of an inability to replant that farmland. I enjoy other sources of protein, as mentioned before. I have also done some research on plant based proteins, which I will hopefully experiment with in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhat did you cook and how did it turn out? Can you share a recipe on the feed for others to try?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/25/2025 2:24 PMIf you like calamari, market squid is one of the highest-rated seafoods on the watch. I did a simple grilled calamari with a honey glaze, it was very tasty. Another recipe is deep-frying the squid, especially the tentacles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityEvery dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/25/2025 2:19 PMFirst Solar is a large solar energy company which is a great option if you want to invest in solar panels for your house. NEE is a power plant company that also do wholesale for renewable energy. With such a large customer base its very likely you will be supporting them in their efforts to develop wind and solar energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/25/2025 2:13 PMI have used a lot of Ziplock bags for food and other items. I have started using the reusable containers I have at home much more. The number of bags I use is also tied to my consumption, so minimizing this does affect the amount of plastic I dispose of. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Hiroki Hibbard 3/15/2025 2:34 AMGoing for walks in the morning has made me appreciate where I live even more. There is enough urban nature to support a lot of birds, which is always nice to listen to. My biggest gripe is the lack of crosswalks within a reasonable distance.
