Jazmin's actions
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost or worm bin where I live.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 90 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 15 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 7 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling; Recycled Metals; Recycled Plastics
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, including electronics and metals.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Visit the Coast
Macroalgae Protection and Restoration
I will visit a coastal or ocean site to experience the ecosystem and look for the presence of macroalgae/seaweed.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Cook With Seaweed
Seaweed Farming
I will use seaweed in a new recipe.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 10 trees in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Electricity
Calculate My Household Carbon Footprint
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Visit the CoastWhat coastal site did you visit and what did you learn while there?
Jazmin Hernandez 2/11/2024 1:22 PMI went to Cannon Beach this weekend! I saw lots of algae, hermit crabs, barnacles, anemones, seastars, and muscles. I enjoyed looking at the different types of algae and watching the crabs scamper around. I learned a lot about hermit crab behavior. They do not enjoy being held.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jazmin Hernandez 2/09/2024 12:26 PMSince the ice storm, I've noticed fallen trees around the neighborhood. it makes me a bit worried about the reduced tree canopy we will see in the summer. I also saw lots of songbirds, a robin, and a blue jay. I've been enjoying looking at the Canadian geese in a pond near my house as well.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Cook With SeaweedWhat recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?
Jazmin Hernandez 1/16/2024 4:29 PM
I made spam musibis using Nori roasted seaweed! I will definitely be making it again (it's one of my comfort foods). Nori is made from red algae (), one of the three major groups of macroalgae. I'm a big fan of seaweed so I'm excited to try new recipes!-
Celine Fitzmaurice 2/19/2024 12:13 PMThanks for sharing. I just met a School of Business Adjunct who runs a seaweed business on the Oregon coast. It's a promising business venture for sustainable fisheries. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate My Household Carbon FootprintAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Jazmin Hernandez 1/16/2024 4:14 PMI used the EPA carbon footprint calculator to determine my household emissions. The website also allowed me to browse through various practices that help reduce our impact. Some of these actions include: Replacing incandescent lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR lights, washing clothes in cold water, hang-drying clothes, reducing the miles we drive or using public transit, and properly recycling common household goods. Ultimately these small actions add up and make a substantial difference.
