I went to Cannon Beach this weekend! I saw lots of algae, hermit crabs, barnacles, anemones, seastars, and muscles. I enjoyed looking at the different types of algae and watching the crabs scamper around. I learned a lot about hermit crab behavior. They do not enjoy being held.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Since the ice storm, I've noticed fallen trees around the neighborhood. it makes me a bit worried about the reduced tree canopy we will see in the summer. I also saw lots of songbirds, a robin, and a blue jay. I've been enjoying looking at the Canadian geese in a pond near my house as well.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Cook With Seaweed
What recipe did you make and how did it turn out? Will you cook with seaweed again?

I made spam musibis using Nori roasted seaweed! I will definitely be making it again (it's one of my comfort foods). Nori is made from red algae (), one of the three major groups of macroalgae. I'm a big fan of seaweed so I'm excited to try new recipes!

Thanks for sharing. I just met a School of Business Adjunct who runs a seaweed business on the Oregon coast. It's a promising business venture for sustainable fisheries.

I used the EPA carbon footprint calculator to determine my household emissions. The website also allowed me to browse through various practices that help reduce our impact. Some of these actions include: Replacing incandescent lightbulbs with ENERGY STAR lights, washing clothes in cold water, hang-drying clothes, reducing the miles we drive or using public transit, and properly recycling common household goods. Ultimately these small actions add up and make a substantial difference.
